GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Sporting purple ribbons in memory of one of their teachers, Western Heights Middle School’s indoor guard took the floor Saturday at Greencastle-Antrim High School 25th annual guard competition.

Dancing to “Home Is Where the Heart Is,” the 18-member team captivated the crowd, sitting elbow to elbow, in the Greencastle-Antrim High School gymnasium.

Dressed in burgundy T-shirts and blue jeans, the indoor guard team let their flag and rifle work tell their story as hundreds of spectators sat mesmerized by their precision.

Dean Schroeder, who was a media specialist at the middle school, was killed in a December head-on crash in Chambersburg, Pa.

The Greencastle-Antrim guard marked its 25th anniversary by hosting the indoor guard competition as well as holding an alumni reception near the gym.

Western Heights Middle School was one of 37 teams competing in Saturday’s event hosted by the Keystone Indoor Drill Association.

Association judges evaluated the units on movement, execution of equipment, ensemble analysis and general effect for a possible total of 100 points.

Abigail Fuller had just completed her competitions for Waynesboro’s middle school indoor guard.

This is her second year participating in guard.

“I like it because it teaches discipline and helps you learn how to perform as part of a team,” Abigail said.

Greencastle was her second competition on Saturday. She competed at Waynesboro earlier in the day.

“It’s really exciting when the crowd cheers. It really helps with the nerves,” she said. “It sort of takes any nervousness away.”

Before South Hagerstown High School’s indoor guard performed, Samantha Rossiter put the final touches of makeup on and curled her hair.

She likes having her team’s performance come together.

“I like the feeling of having people watch you and seeing everything fall into place,” Samantha said.

Like Abigail, this was her second competition of the day.

“I’m focusing on doing a good performance,” she said.

South Hagerstown had an undefeated season last year, and Samantha said the team is hoping to make this year another undefeated season.

“It helps when the crowd is cheering for you,” Samantha said.

Brooke and Ryan Eberly instruct the Greencastle-Antrim Middle School indoor guard.

They said the guard program is growing.

“We have 14 middle-school kids this year and 15 high-school kids. It’s the strongest group that Greencastle has had in a very long time,” Brooke Eberly said.

It gives kids another outlet, she said

“We take anybody and teach them. Not everybody is going to be on the floor at the same time, but everybody has a part in the show. Everybody is important,” Eberly said.
