Men's Basketball: Ramaeu takes turn to pace Hawks

February 16, 2013

BEL AIR, Md. — It was Kervin Ramaeu’s turn to be the next man up for the Hagerstown Community College men’s basketball team.

Ramaeu scored 30 points on Saturday — the third different player to lead the Hawks in scoring in the last week — and was the key in a crucial two-minute span to lead HCC to a 97-84 victory over Frederick in the semifinals of the Maryland JuCo Conference tournament at Harford Community College.

Ramaeu scored seven straight points from the last minute of the first half through the first of the second half to allow HCC, the second seed, to first grab a 40-40 tie at the intermission before providing it with a five-point lead it never relinquished.

HCC (25-4) came back from a 34-25 deficit in the final four minutes of the first half to forge the tie.

With the victory, HCC moves into today’s 2 p.m. championship game against Harford, which beat Catonsville 76-63 in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Catonsville reached the semifinals by defeating top-seeded Baltimore on Friday.

Rameau kept HCC in the game in the first half by scoring 14 of his 30 points. He hit a pair of layups and a foul shot in the first minute of the second half to grab the lead for the Hawks.

Tony Jenifer scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half to help HCC add some distance on the third-seeded Cougars (20-9).

The Hawks built a seven-point lead before Frederick made a run, using a pair of Markee Mazyck free throws to close to within 60-59 with 11:18 remaining.

HCC came back to score the next seven points, starting with a Jerel Carter jumper and a 3-pointer by Jenifer, to pull away to a 67-59 lead.

The Hawks led by as many as 19 points the rest of the way.

Remeau’s outburst followed a 25-point outing by Donte Thomas on Tuesday’s in HCC’s win over Dundalk in the tournament’s play-in game and a 26-point night by Jenifer on Friday against Howard.

Carter had 10 points with 10 rebounds and nine assists for HCC.
