Basketball league in need of sponsors

Memorial Recreation Center is seeking coaches and sponsors for the Ruth Monroe Summer Basketball League in Wheaton Park.

The league is looking for 10 sponsors each for the junior division (ages 10 to 13) and the senior division (ages 14 to 18).

The sponsorships cost $500 per team. The fee includes expenses for two referees per game, T-shirts with the sponsor logo and name for a roster of 10 to 12 players and trophies. It also includes contributions to the banquet dinner at the end of the season.

The official start date for the league is Sunday, June 16.

Dinner planned

On Saturday, the ladies of Ebenezer AME Church, 40 West Bethel St., are preparing a chitterlings or chicken dinner with collard greens, potato salad, and cornbread with a soda.

The meal costs $10. 

It will be eat in or take out. 


Dance is Saturday

On Saturday, a dance will be held at the MLK Gym from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The dance is for adults only. Light refreshments will be served.

The gym is at 131 W. North Ave. in Hagerstown.

Movie night

Movie night will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at Bridge of Life, 14 S. Potomac St. in Hagerstown.

Blossom School holding registration

The Blossom School of Etiquette will hold its class registration Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Homewood Suites by Hilton, 1650 Pullman Lane.

It will also be a time to meet and greet the owner and talk with past graduates about their learning experiences with Blossom School.

Attendees can hear about their successes and how the skills they learned have had an impact on their daily life.

Advisory board

The Memorial Recreation Center advisory board will meet Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Anniversary celebration

Greater Campher Temple King’s Apostle Church World Ministries, 125 Bethel St., will celebrate the seventh annual pastoral anniversary of Presiding Elder Darin and Elect Lady Helen Mency with a preliminary celebration Sunday at 11 a.m. with the Eldership of Greater Campher Temple. At 4 p.m., Bishop Franklin Gordon of Great Commission Deliverance Ministries in Waynesboro, Pa., will lead a service.

The theme for the celebration is “The Sabbatical Year — The Seventh Year of Release.”

Monthly celebrations will be held until the official anniversary, which will be Sunday, April 21. An anniversary banquet is planned Saturday, April 20.

Lenten lunch services

During each Wednesday in Lent, Christ’s Reformed Church will offer a short midday lunch and service in its auditorium from 12:15 to 1 p.m.

Attendees will share a light lunch, then hear lessons from pastor and author Tim Keller from his DVD series, “The Gospel in Life.”

Wednesday, Feb. 27 — “Community: the Context for Change”
Wednesday, March 6 — “Witness: an Alternate City”

• Wednesday, March 27 — “Eternity: the World that is to Come”

Did you know that Wheaton Park was named after Jacob Wheaton who was the first African-American to vote in the state of Maryland after the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment and that his son, John Francis Wheaton was the first African American elected to the Minnesota Legislature, serving in its House of Representatives.
