Women's Basketball: HCC reaches .500 with win over Garrett

HAGERSTOWN — The Hagerstown Community College women’s basketball team continued to show improvement on Sunday afternoon.

The Hawks went on top by a big advantage in the first half and made it stand as they defeated the visiting Garrett College Lakers 75-59 in a Maryland JuCo Conference game.

HCC reached .500 with a 12-12 overall record and moved one win above .500 in conference play at 6-5.

“Ever since Christmas break, we have gone 9-2,” HCC coach Vicky Bullett said. “It is just a good sign of progression.”

Sophomore Katie Sprecher had 12 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots for HCC. Sprecher scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the first 6:49 of the game as HCC built an 18-9 advantage.

“I look for the rebounds on the missed shots,” Sprecher said. “I just tried to read the shots and where they might fall and then I work for the rebound. I think we’re peaking at the right time. We’re jelling together as a team. We’re really starting to play good defense.”

Sprecher said the Hawks did the necessary things to be successful Sunday.

“We just wanted to come out and play hard,” she said. “We wanted to work on anything that we needed to. We were just working the ball well and made some defensive stops. Some of our defensive stops turned into our offensive momentum.”

Miesha Adams had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, while Tiffany Wallace had 12 points, Sasha Orr and Kristine Mstowski had 10 points each and Deidre Burch added seven assists and two steals in the victory.

During the last 6:30 of the first half, the Hawks outscored the Lakers 13-3 to increase their advantage to 42-21 by halftime.

“Considering that we played back-to-back games, I think we did fairly well defensively,” said Bullett, whose team beat Allegany 72-52 on the road Saturday. “We have a few kids that were sick, but they were still productive in the game. Just moving the ball was the key to our victory today. When we can get it out to the perimeter, we are able to bang it. We were going well both on the inside and on the outside.”

Janice Bartley had 17 points for Garrett (10-9, 4-7), while Terra McKenzie had 14 points, Shameena Johnson had 12 points and Hannah Hill added six rebounds for the Lakers.

“Hagerstown moved the ball real well,” Garrett coach Roy Boggess said. “That was a good team that we played. We didn’t give up. We played hard until the end of the game.”
