Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down - Feb. 9

February 09, 2013

Thumbs up to the hundreds of Washington County students in the all-county bands, orchestras and ensembles who performed in the past few weeks. These young musicians spend countless hours honing their skills, and their commitment is evident by the quality of the performances. A tip of the hat, too, to the teachers and guest conductors for giving their time and energy to the endeavors.

Thumbs up to Washington County government, which will provide temporary medical support service to the Fairplay area and pay surrounding fire companies for response until a permanent solution to serving the area is found. The safety of 7,000 residents, about 7,000 prison system inmates, and students and faculty at three schools in the 42-square-mile area is not being taken lightly.

Thumbs down to the person responsible for the fatal shooting of a wild bald eagle in Hardy County, W.Va. The 22-year-old female, which according to a wildlife biologist was one of the oldest on record, is believed to have been shot in flight.
