Kona, Hawaii, was the November 2012 setting for Art and Orpha Cline's 50th wedding anniversary celebration. They were married Nov. 23, 1962, at Grace Brethren Church in Hagerstown.

Pastor Warren Tamkin. Mrs. Orpha V. (Mowen) Cline retired in 1997 after 28 years of service with the State of Maryland, Department of Corrections. Mr. Arthur D. Cline retired in 1997 after 18 years of employment with Envirco Corporation. The Clines live in Hagers-town.

During their five-week vacation, 18 family members traveled to Kona during the Thanksgiving week, including their daughter Tamar, and her sons Christopher and Brandon; Christopher's girlfriend, Shannon; and son Daryn, wife, Michelle and their children Brenden, Teagan and Sheridan. Also attending were Art's brother Carl and wife, Marcy, and their children, Kim, Sean and Melisa,  Kim's husband, Andre, and their son, Nicholas. Close friends George and Nancy Davis, Nancy's sister Carol and her husband Larry McCaffrey, children Sean and Catherine; and Cliff and Betty Bridgford also attended.

The week was filled with golf, surf, volcano and waterfall hikes, snorkeling, a swim with the dolphins for the grandchildren, a traditional Thanksgiving dinner and a surprise wedding ceremony at the Hilton Waikoloa, where the local pastor performed a renewing of the Clines' vows in a small chapel. Local musicians played traditional Hawaiian wedding songs on the ukulele.  The event was followed by a luau complete with fire dancers and traditional hula girls. Art and Orpha did not hesitate to join in the festivities.

Prior to the Hawaii trip, the family surprised Art and Orpha with a luau-themed party for their 50th anniversary/70th birthdays at Beaver Creek Country Club. The party was hosted by their children Tamar Whipple and Daryn Cline. More than 80 friends and relatives attended. Guests included several of the original wedding party, Sandy (Sellers) Corwell, maid of honor; Earl Cline, best man and brother of the groom; Cindy (Mowen) Gipe, flower girl,;Brian Mowen, ring bearer; and Jeff Hull, groomsman.

Art's mother Catherine, 89, was also in attendance. She passed away July 30, 2012, a few months after the surprise party.

Tammy and Daryn utilized many of the original wedding colors, flowers and decorations, including a reproduction of their wedding cake. Tammy arranged each table centerpiece with water-filled vases including flowers and floating candles and photos of Art and Orpha's photographs from the early '60s. Sandy provided a replica of Orpha's wedding bouquet, yellow and white rosebuds arranged on a family Bible. Cindy incorporated the flower basket with mixed fall flowers that she carried behind the bride and groom.

Many relatives and friends traveled from South Carolina, Pennsylvania and North Carolina to attend the celebration. Video histories of the Clines' 50 years together were shown.
