Workshop set on applying for student financial aid

February 07, 2013

HALFWAY — For those who want a little help navigating the process of applying for student financial aid, a local group is offering a kickstart this weekend.

The Greater Hagerstown Committee Education Forum is hosting FAFSA Frenzy from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday near JCPenney in Valley Mall.

This is a free workshop educating parents and students on how to obtain financial aid for college. The event will include hourly Financial Aid 101 seminars and free assistance in filling out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Students must fill out a FAFSA to be considered for:
• State of Maryland financial aid
• federal financial aid
• institutional financial aid

March 1 is the deadline to apply for financial aid from the State of Maryland for the 2013-14 school year. Students also should be mindful of the deadlines of any colleges to which they are applying.

“Check with all the colleges you are considering applying to for their financial aid requirements and deadlines, recommends the Maryland Higher Education Commission website at www.mhec.state.md.us/financialAid/apply.asp. “They may have supplemental forms you need to complete.”

Students attending the weekend workshop should bring a parent and the parent’s 2012 tax returns (if available) or W-2s. There will be trained volunteers available to help participants through the process. Space is limited, so reservations are recommended.

For questions or to reserve a seminar time slot, contact Jeanne Singer at 301-797-2485 or FAFSAFrenzy@gmail.com. Or go to www.facebook.com/GHCEducationForum.
