The year 2012 was a significant milestone for the Miss Washington County/Miss Western Maryland pageant.

It had been 66 years since the pageant originated in 1947, and the new Miss Washington County 2012 was the 50th person to be selected to wear the Miss Hagerstown or Miss Washington County crown.

The name was changed in 1979 from Miss Hagerstown to Miss Washington County.

Mary Teal Mulligan of Williamsport was selected as the new Miss Washington County 2012. She is a graduate of the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, where her concentration was in the dance program.

She is in her second year at Hagerstown Community College. She is active in the community making many appearances and serving on the board of Big Sisters/Big Brothers.  Her photo can be seen on billboards in the area for Hagerstown Community College.

During the Miss Maryland 2012 annual competition in June, Mulligan represented the county and placed fourth runner-up.

More than 20 of the former titleholders came for the event held on Feb. 18, 2012, at The Maryland Theatre.

They were introduced on stage during the show and had a reunion reception at Bulls ’n Bears Restaurant before the event.

Plans are under way for this year’s competition to be held Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. at Kepler Center for the Performing Arts at Hagerstown Community College.
