Happy birthday to Martin “Buck” Harsh Jr., who turns 87 on Feb. 7. Harsh has lived in Williamsport all his life, except for the years he served in the Navy during World War II. He owned Harsh’s Meat Market until he retired.

Community Band prepares for 2013

The Williamsport Community Band will begin its 16th season with an all-member and new-member practice Sunday at St. James Brethren Church’s auditorium, 17718 Lappans Road in St. James.

Rehearsal is from 2 to 4 p.m. The band invites anyone with band-playing experience to come and be a playing member of the band.

The 2013 concert season begins with the annual spring concert Sunday, May 12, at Springfield Farm Barn.

WES PTA plans school fundraiser

The Williamsport Elementary School PTA will hold a fundraiser at the Greene Turtle, 12818-A Shank Farm Way, Hagerstown, Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.


The restaurant will donate 10 percent of all sales to Williamsport Elementary School as part of the restaurant’s “Funds for Friends” program. No coupon is required.

Shrove Tuesday pancake supper planned Feb. 12

Zion Lutheran Church, 35 W. Potomac St. in Williamsport, will host a Shrove Tuesday all-you-can-eat pancake supper Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The supper costs $5.50 for adults; $3.50 for those ages 4 to 12; and is free for those 3 and younger.

Tickets are available from the church office at 301-223-7260 or can be purchased at the door.

Information meeting planned at high school

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, Williamsport High School will host a meeting for students and parents interested in attending the AVID Program or the STEM Academy.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the high school library. Eighth-graders interested in the AVID or STEM program should plan to attend the session.  At the end of the meeting, the group will move to the auditorium for the transition night meeting. 

The snow date will be Tuesday, Feb. 19. 

Transition night

Williamsport High School will hold its eighth-grade transition night Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. It will be held after the STEM and AVID meeting. Students and parents will be able to meet coaches, club advisers, STEM teachers, Technical High School personnel and others to sign-up and find out more information about these programs and opportunities. 

The staff looks forward to meeting students in their first step to high school.

Spirit Night planned

Williamsport High School AVID Spirit Night will be Monday, Feb. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Chick-fil-A on Wesel Boulevard in Hagerstown. 

The AVID group will receive 20 percent of the profits from sales for that night. 

The prize wheel will be out and possible prizes include free athletic passes, apparel donated by the WHS Athletic Boosters, food items, coupon books, and other prizes.
