Mail Call - Feb. 4

February 03, 2013

“All this about the teenage pregnancies, you always hear about the girls. Well, the boys play a part in it, too. Are we going to educate them?”
— Smithsburg

“You know, I was watching the inaugural yesterday of President Obama’s second term, and he really did a beautiful job, beautiful speech. But I’m very much convinced that the Republicans will never get that office back as long as they got people like Sean Hannity out there, Mark Levine out there, Bill O’Reilly, and a couple more of them out there, spieling their spiel. And it’s just a shame the way they talked about this man.”
— Hagerstown

“The caller who called in to Mail Call about President Obama getting the national debt under control, and that our children are now well protected, I just wonder what kind of Kool-Aid he’s been drinking. It must have been a special formula that Obama made himself, because this guy is, evidently doesn’t have a clue what Obama’s really doing. Our national debt continues to go up.”
— Hagerstown

“In response to The Herald-Mail’s Jan. 16 article on teen pregnancies and subteen sexual activity: Our health officer needs to invite Planned Parenthood to Washington County. This is the procedure; Planned Parenthood cannot just set up offices on its own. Parents and schools need to emphasize abstinence and adoption. Abortion is also an important alternative. Families receiving Micah’s Backpacks of weekend food for children also need to separately receive condoms so that more victims of poverty will not be added to already foodless homes.”
— Boonsboro

“To the nurses and aides on the fourth floor, east, that took care of me when I had pneumonia, they were the best. I was in 43281. I wanted to send them a thank-you card, but I didn’t know where to send it, so please give them my regards. Thank you very much, nurses and aides.”
— Hagerstown

“To the caller from Hagerstown who said they saw where Hancock is donating some of their money for the speed cameras to Children’s Village, and they don’t understand what Hagerstown’s doing with their money, they don’t hear anything about it. Well, obviously, they don’t read the newspaper or listen to the news, because it’s been in the newspaper and on the news lots of times, about putting on extra police officers and buying police cars. So keep up on your reading in the newspaper or listen to the news.”
— Smithsburg

“Well, now I see that the Republicans have announced May 18, 2013, is where they’re going to take their stand. ... They have been saying for a year and a half, they were going to stand their ground firmly against all these tax hikes, unemployment compensation forever, health care. They’ve folded on absolutely everything the conservatives hold dear. I call on all Republicans ... You are ... not deserving of holding office. Resign.”
— Chambersburg, Pa.

“I personally want to thank Vice President Biden and President Obama for their gun initiatives, particularly since gun sales are up by nearly 60 percent. So their good intentions have had the opposite results.”
— Hagerstown

“I see there was another school shooting, this time in Texas. Well, he didn’t use a rock or a hammer or a club or a knife. But thank God his Second Amendment rights were there.”
— Hagerstown

“Tell these Republicans, their hero, Petraeus, Gen. Petraeus, that they idolize, they think is God’s gift to everything, well, if he was doing his job on the CIA he was on, with this Benghazi thing; he was out there playing with his little girlfriend while these guys were getting killed. It was his job to be involved in it, so — but they’re letting him off the hook, and I don’t know why, but it’ll come out one of these days. So there’s some blame to go around, and I think he’s part of it.”
— Hagerstown

“America has gone from being the land of the free to the land of the freeloader. So many people want their freebies from the government, have their hand out, and they keep electing officials who will give them freebies that they did not earn. I do not blame rich people who put their money overseas to invest because ... we need to get rid of these freeloaders. Get them off of freeloading, and get them to work.”
— Washington County

“I don’t have anything against the Baltimore Ravens, but every time you turn on any sports channel, they talk about Ray Lewis this, Ray Lewis that. He didn’t do all that for Baltimore. Baltimore Ravens are a good team. Plus Ray Lewis, he has six kids from four different wives. ... You don’t want your kids to look at him as a hero or anything. He did a lot of wrong.”
— Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

“Question: Are you animal owners taking care of your animals that are outside in this cold weather? My dog lives outside, at the back of the house, in a totally huge, winterized area; it has a heater. Tomorrow morning she will be having two eggs, fried hard, a generous portion of fried ham and a side dish of dry dog food. Please make sure you’re taking good care of your animals. And I don’t want to hear anything about animals shouldn’t eat people food because my dog always eats people food. She has no complaints about it at all, especially when I give her a steak.”
— Sharpsburg

“The day after Christmas, I was at the ... market on Pennsylvania Avenue when a young man stepped in front of my cart and said ‘Merry Christmas,’ and looking down, I noticed a $50 bill in his hand. I was so surprised and couldn’t believe it was happening to me. I gave him a big hug and ‘God bless’ed him. It’s not every day an 83-year-old woman can be blessed as I was, and I sincerely thank you, young man, for your thoughtfulness.”
— Greencastle, Pa.
