Robert Willett Rohrer, 98, of Hagerstown, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at the Village at Robinwood.

Born Dec. 30, 1914, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Robert Richard and Helen S. (Willett) Rohrer.

Robert was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.

He was a veteran of the United States Army. Robert retired after 40 years of service as an engineer with the Western Maryland Railway.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church; Mount Zion Mason Lodge 774 in McConnellsburg from 1985 to 1992 before he transferred his membership to the Friendship Lodge No. 84 A.F. & A.M. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the United Transportation Union of Railroads. He loved to garden especially budding fruit trees and roses. He loved baseball and was a original player on the American Legion baseball team. Robert donated baseball equipment to the children of the West End of town, who shared his love for baseball. While serving as a member of City Park Board, he worked towards having lights provided to the West End baseball field.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Hazel Rebecca (Martin) Rohrer; three daughters, Patricia A. Reeder and husband, Ronald, of Hagerstown, Joyce A. Sheffler of Chambersburg, Pamela S. Darden, of Newville, Pa.; two brothers, Roy Rohrer and wife, Marilyn, of Lincoln, Neb., Philip Rohrer of Hagerstown; four grandchildren, Deanna Chappman of Chambersburg, Jessica Rohm and husband, Brian, and Robert Darden all of Newville, Pa., and Susan Reeder of Ashburn, Va.; and one great-granddaughter, Sophia Rohm of Newville.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Kathryn Baumgardner, Mary S. Berger and Anna H. Hartman; and a brother, Paul E. Rohrer.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Revs. Stan and Stephanie Steele officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Maryland State Honor Guard.

Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Robert's name to the St. Mark's Lutheran Church Food Pantry, 601 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740 or to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
