HAGERSTOWN — South Hagerstown’s girls basketball team used a strong defensive effort and got enough timely offense to score a 50-28 victory over Smithsburg on Tuesday in the MVAL Antietam.

“We just wanted to put as much defensive pressure on their guards as we could,” South coach Nate Naylor said. “Our goal is to try to hold opposing teams to under 10 points in a quarter. We pretty much stuck to that tonight.”

Junior Tayana Stewart had 16 points and 14 rebounds to help South (13-2, 9-0) remain undefeated in conference play.

“If I do my job, then my team will be successful,” Stewart said. “The shots were just falling tonight. When we work hard together and get aggressive, then the other team can’t stop us. We put pressure on them.

“It will be exciting if we win the MVAL Antietam title, because it hasn’t happened in a long time.”

Chelsey Scott had 10 points, while freshman point guard Lindsey Bedregal had six rebounds for the Rebels. Alexis Shaffer grabbed all six of her rebounds in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore center Beverly Kum finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds for Smithsburg (4-7, 3-5). Cassidy Vega hauled in nine rebounds and Elyse Koterwas added six rebounds.

After a scoreless opening 3:09, the Rebels’ offense started to get going. Stewart had six points and four rebounds in the first quarter, while the Rebels’ defense pitched a shutout for a 10-0 lead at the end of the period.

Stewart added seven points and four rebounds in the second quarter to help the Rebels increase their advantage to 25-10 at halftime.

Scott had seven points in the third quarter to help the Rebels extend their lead to 38-15.

“Some of our key players didn’t play for a long period of time tonight because they were in foul trouble, but they were productive during the minutes that they did play,” Naylor said. “The rest of the team stepped up to contribute.”

The Leopards outscored the Rebels 13-12 in the fourth quarter.
