HAGERSTOWN — With the exception of a brief 2-2 tie, North Hagerstown’s boys basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 54-47 victory over Williamsport on Friday night, keeping its half-game lead over South Hagerstown in the MVAL Antietam Conference.

How the winner and loser were decided was simple:

North (12-4, 8-2) controlled the offensive boards early, especially Kenny McCrary, who had four offensive rebounds for scores alone.

Meanwhile, Williamsport (7-8, 6-4) — which is shooting 55 percent from the foul line this season — shot itself in the foot with an even poorer performance, hitting just 7 of 21.

North also extracted a measure of revenge for a 63-61 loss to Williamsport on Jan. 2.

“You look at the stats and our forwards really came through for us tonight,” said North coach Kevin Hartman, speaking of McCrary, Andrew Yacyk and Will Peralta.

Those three dominated the glass as North held a 30-24 margin overall but did damage on the offensive boards.

“(North) definitely hurt us on the boards,” Williamsport coach Scott Mowbray said. “They got baskets in transition and on inbounds plays and that shouldn’t happen.”

Leading 22-19 midway through the second quarter, North went on a 10-4 run to close with a 32-23 lead at halftime. In the first half, North hit 14 of 24 from the field for 58 percent, most on layups.

The Hubs moved their lead to 44-34 with a minute left in the third period on buckets by Isaiah Keyes and Ted Schoeck, before Williamsport made a last dash.

Behind a goal by Nick Johnson and a 3-pointer by Cameron Cross, Williamsport closed within 47-45 with 3:45 remaining. But the Wildcats couldn’t score again until 1:04 was left, when Sterling Christy hit two free throws, narrowing North’s lead to 51-47.

“We did a better job in the second half getting the ball inside but we just didn’t execute as we have been in the crunch,” Mowbray said.

Schoeck hit two free throws and Yacyk had one in the final seconds.

“Our game plan was simple by not letting (Williamsport) get layups like the first game,” Hartman said. “We had to limit their shots. And we shot a high percentage and that’s what you do with layups.”

McCrary ended with 14 points and also led the Hubs with 11 rebounds. Keyes added 10 points and the Hubs received eight valuable points from Schoeck, finally back from offseason injuries.

Johnson led Williamsport with 16 points and Christy had 14 points, but made only 4 of 12 from the line.
