Oratorical contest

January 28, 2013|Susie Hoffman | Around Funkstown

If you find your evening of Monday, Feb. 4 in need of a boost, I suggest you make your way to the ballroom of the American Legion ballroom in Funkstown and watch as Washington County high school students in grades nine through 12 compete in a patriotic oratorical contest.

The speeches on the Constitution begin at 7 p.m. and light refreshments will be served following the contest.

I have for a number of years been privileged to judge this competition, and was exceedingly impressed by the poise and knowledge exhibited by these young men and women.

Scholarship money and the chance to advance to the next level of competition is on the line.

Basket bingo to benefit band

It’s the extra things in education that make the well-rounded student, the things like being able to learn an instrument and perform in the band.

The Band Boosters at E. Russell Hicks Middle School are inviting everyone to come to Elks Lodge 378 on Sunday, Feb. 17, for basket bingo and the chance to support the middle school band.

The doors open at 11:30 a.m., lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m., and bingo gets under way at 1:30 p.m.

The cost of the ticket includes 25 games, as well as lunch.

All baskets will be filled.

There will also be basket raffles, door prizes, tip jars and King Tuts.
For tickets, call Karen Baer at 301-797-2169 or Michele Hull at 301-766-8110, ext. 77206, or Betty Sue Kitchen at 301-766-8110, ext. 77218.
