HAGERSTOWN — The St. Maria Goretti boys basketball team displayed some balance Saturday afternoon as 11 players found the scoring column in a 64-28 win over Maryland School for the Deaf in an Independent-Parochial School League game at the Gael Center.

“We did some things that we wanted to do,” said Goretti coach Amrit Rayfield said. “We shared the ball well. We defended well and we rebounded well. I was pleased with our unselfishness and our balanced scoring.”

Tyrus Fleetwood scored a team-high 10 points, while Martin Geben had six blocked shots and six rebounds for the Gaels (16-8, 3-0). Toby Christensen had eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

The Gaels never trailed in the game, opening with a 5-0 run on a layup by Fleetwood and a three-point play by Geben.

Goretti followed up four straight MSD points with an 8-0 run, highlighted by two steals and layups by Ryan Grant.

“I love to steal the ball,” Grant said. “I also love it when my teammates can score off of my passes.”

“Today was one of those days where we came together as a team,” Grant said.

Goretti led 13-6 after one period, then extended that lead to 28-12 at halftime. The Gaels outscored the Orioles 21-6 in the third quarter to seal the deal.

“I was proud of our effort, overall,” Rayfield said. “At this point of the season, we are playing well. With 24 games into the season, we have seen a lot and we have responded well. We have played a very tough schedule.”

Jake Bonheyo led MSD (4-13, 0-3) with 10 points. Mo Kamara pulled down 10 rebounds and Cody Moers added seven rebounds for the Orioles.

“(Goretti) played good defense,” MSD coach James DeStefano said. “They played together as a team and they have a deep bench.”
