Jump For Pink could provide green for foundation

The upcoming Jump For Pink Jump-A-Thon event at 4 Star Gymnastics in Williamsport will help raise funds and awareness for women affected by breast cancer.

It also could help provide some cash for one local hospital foundation.

Money raised at Saturday’s event will be donated to Unite for HER when 4 Star’s teams travel to Philadelphia for the USAG Competition Pink Invitational-Gymnasts Unite meet Feb. 22 to 24.

The three teams which raise the most money can choose a hospital or breast cancer center to which Unite For HER will make a donation.

“We entered the meet last year and didn’t realize that gyms had the opportunity to raise money for a local hospital,” said Lisa Noel, the vendor and sponsor coordinator for the Jump For Pink event. “So the parents got together and threw out some ideas that would bring in some money to bring back that grant to our area.”

If 4 Star is among the top three gyms, it plans to designate the Meritus Make-A-Difference Breast Cancer Foundation through the John Marsh Cancer Center as the beneficiary of the donation from Unite For HER.

Noel said the top three gyms last year raised between $6,000 and $8,300. 4 Star has set a goal of $9,000 for this year’s Jump-A-Thon.

That goal would be achieved through pledges received from participants, donations from the public and vendors who will be on site the day of the event.

Noel said about two dozen vendors had signed up for the event in early January. They pay a fee to get a table and that money goes to the event.

“We’ll have representatives from 31, Scentsy, Avon, Mary Kay ... those kinds of things,” Noel said. “They’ll be donating a percentage of their sales, and all will donate at least $15 in product that will be bundled for a silent auction.”

Saturday’s event will begin with registration (for those who bring in pledges) and an open gym at 11 a.m. An hour-long show featuring 4 Star gymnasts, White Tiger Martial Arts, Clarissa’s Dance Studio of Greencastle, Pa., and other outside performers will begin at noon.

The Jump-A-Thon itself will start at 1 p.m. and is open to everyone. Participants will “jump” for one hour, either on the floor, trampoline or using other equipment in the gym.

At 2 p.m., all who participated in the jump are invited to take part in a gymnastics class.

Noel said a limited number of Unite for HER T-shirts will be on sale for $10, with $6.25 of that price going to the UFH fund. There will also be a banner that attendees can sign in rememberance of or in support of someone who has been affected by breast cancer.

There is no admission charge to attend the Jump-A-Thon, but donations will be accepted and added to 4 Star’s donation to UFH.
