Senior center celebrates Christmas

Christmas brought joy to guests at the Southeastern senior center in Keedysville. A Dec. 21 holiday party included a gift exchange, a color-changing snowflake and a stocking for each person.

Bockmiller to present Civil War film on Feb. 6

Author Stephen Bockmiller will present his film, “Divided Valor:  Hagerstonians In The Civil War” at the Wednesday, Feb. 6, meeting of the Battle of Sharpsburg Camp 1582, Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The meeting will be at Sharpsburg Town Hall, 106 E. Main St., Sharpsburg at 7 p.m. Bockmiller’s video documentary profiles six Hagerstown residents — two Union veterans, two Confederates and two civilians — and the stories of their participation in the Civil War.

Produced by the Department of Community and Economic Development of the City of Hagerstown, and using a mix of archival photos, staged recreations and interviews, the video involved a cast of dozens and was filmed on location in Hagerstown as well as other locations in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania.


The meeting is free and open to the public.

4-H Club to hold horse show Feb. 17

The Saddles ‘n’ Spurs 4-H Club will host the Washington County Open Model Horse Show Sunday, Feb. 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center’s multipurpose building

The ag center is at 7303 Sharpsburg Pike, north of Sharpsburg.

The show is open to those ages 18 and younger.

Classes include:

  • Fun division with a two-entry limit per class and open to all brands of horses
  • Performance division (limit one entry per class — Breyer/Stone brands only)
  • Halter (limit two entries per class — Breyer/Stone brands only).

A once daily registration fee covers all classes. Registration costs $10 if paid by Feb. 13 and $15 after that date.

Antietam Station to have train display on Sunday

The Antietam Station at 17230 Shepherdstown Pike, Sharpsburg, will be open Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Club members of the Hagerstown Model Railroad Museum will run and display four sizes of model trains and conduct tours of the historic train station. Admission is by donation.

Church to meet in Sharpsburg

The Love Grows Here Lutheran Church will meet Sunday for services at 101 N. Main St., Sharpsburg, beside the Jefferson Security Bank. Services begin at 10 a.m. Parking is available at the rear of the building.

Little League to hold rules clinic

Maryland District1 Little League will conduct a free rules and umpire training clinic on Tuesdays from Feb. 5 to March 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Church of Christ, 10644 Leitersburg Pike.

The clinic will discuss new rules and rule changes regarding illegal bat penalties, pitch count changes, new softball bat regulations and basic rules of the game.

Baseball and softball managers, coaches and umpires or interested parents should attend the sessions.

Drennen hosts Southeastern Senior

Site Manager Martha Drennen will host senior activities at Little Antietam Community Center, 40 Mount Vernon Drive, Keedysville, during the month of February.

Registered nurse Ita Kavanaugh will present a class titled “Food Allergies” Monday, Feb. 25. Sandy Ferris and Marcia Davies will conduct exercise classes Wednesdays and Fridays. Regularly scheduled activities include bean bag toss, bingo and horseshoes. Blood pressure screening occurs monthly.
