Girls Basketball: Catoctin holds off Blazers

CLEAR SPRING — Catoctin's girls basketball team bolted out of the gate but needed to hold on Tuesday to defeat Clear Spring 56-45 in an MVAL Antietam.

The Cougars (9-6, 6-3) played like a team possessed in the first half, utilizing a full-court pressure to keep the Blazers (4-10, 0-8) off-balance.

Catoctin forced 12 first-half turnovers and held Clear Spring to a paltry 7-for-31 shooting. Meanwhile, Kristine Erfurdt paced the Cougars with 13 points en route to a 36-17 halftime lead.

“I think we played a very good first half. We shot well, we attacked, we played good defense — We were playing Lady Cougar basketball,” said Catoctin coach Amy Entwistle. “But we sort of broke down in the second half.”

Erfurdt continued her hot shooting in the second half — finishing with a game high 21 points, along with seven steals and seven rebounds — but Clear Spring punched some holes in Catoctin' defense.

The Blazers upped their tempo on offense in the second half, sending the Cougars' defense reeling. Clear Spring outscored Catoctin 30-20, led by 13 points by Kristen Mellott and 12 by Sam Staley. Staley was also a monster on the boards with a game-high 17 rebounds.

Despite the potent second half, the Blazers shot 10-for-24 to finish 33 percent from the floor.

“The effort was fantastic tonight. If we could just get our field goal percentage right, we're going to be in most of these games,” said Clear Spring coach Bill McIntire.

“We've been used to losing around here. Now with a game like this, where we stay in with a good team like Catoctin, (our players) have seen what they can accomplish when they keep up the effort. Now we've just got to get over that hump in the MVAL.”

Stephanie Andrew had 12 points, four steals and four rebounds and Amanda Hackney had nine points, four steals and five rebounds for Catoctin.
