Communities That Care organization seeks members

January 22, 2013

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — A Waynesboro organization formed by the late K. Marilyn Smith is seeking new members.

“Marilyn was our first and only community mobilizer for the organization. She was the driving force behind starting Communities That Care and she kept it going,” Communities That Care President Cindy Sullivan said in a news release.

“It will take all of our combined efforts to do what Marilyn did all by herself,” board member Barbara Layman said.

Communities That Care’s board of directors was created in 2001 under Smith’s leadership. She died Jan. 8.

Communities That Care is working on the third annual Waynesboro’s Got Talent show, to be held in April. In addition, the organization holds an after-graduation party at the Waynesboro Area YMCA.

“Marilyn was at every one of these events. She thought staying up all night to host this party was fun, and I know she enjoyed it as much as the students who attended,” said Kimberly Eaton, vice president of Communities That Care.

“No one wants to let her down because this community and the welfare of the children and families here were always her top priority,” she said in the release.

Other projects include the Parents Who Host Lose the Most campaign that targets parents who provide alcohol to minors. Communities That Care also supports the Pennsylvania Youth Survey, which collects data on the risk and protective factors in the community based on information provided by students through a survey given to sixth-, eighth-, 10th-, and 12th-graders every other year.

“Waynesboro has been participating in this survey since its inception, which gives us data going back 10 years. This data can be used to secure grant funding for community projects,” Eaton said.
