North-South alumni football game forming

For the vast majority of high school football players in Hagerstown, the North-South game is not just the final game of the season. It often becomes the final time those players ever dress in pads for a full-contact game.

Now those old Hubs and Rebels could have another chance to buckle a chin strap and do some hitting.

Last spring, Gridiron Alumni fielded a game at Shepherd University between former players from Martinsburg and Musselman high schools. This year, they want to bring a game to the Hub City.

“They asked us to come up last year, and the next thing we know there are 100 people signed up from Musselman and 87 from Martinsburg,” said Chris Hall, Senior Event Coordinator at Gridiron Alumni. “Apparently, a bunch of the guys from South play flag football with guys from Martinsburg, heard about the game from them and contacted me to see if they could play, too.”

Hall said an handful of alumni from the city schools have already signed up to play, but neither school has near enough bodies to field a team yet.

“Word of mouth is important, and with Facebook and Twitter it’s easier to get the word around,” Hall said. “But I think those who have signed up have run through their friend lists at this point.”

Hall said the first school to have 30 players registered gets home field advantage, and the first 50 players signed up for each school are guaranteed a roster spot.

A date for the game has not been set, but Hall is targeting April or May.

“We want to get them off the couch and start running around. For some guys, it’ll be the first time in 10 years they’ve had that kind of physical activity,” Hall said. “I tell them to think of their hamstrings as rubber bands they’ve had in the freezer for a couple years. Take it slow and stretch them out.”
