Lunch group serves funds to Hospice

January 20, 2013

It is a local chapter of Business Network International, or BNI, whose mission is to help members increase their business through a structured, positive and professional word-of-mouth referral program that enables them to develop long-term, meaningful relationships with local business professionals.

The revenue generated by the chapter members as a direct result of referrals is tracked each week. When a member is successful in doing business with a referral he or she received from another member, an anonymous “thank-you” card is turned in stating the name of the person who gave the referral and the dollar amount of the business generated.

The total revenue that was a direct result of referrals from other members in the group for 2012 was $209,017.

Members also have the option of putting a dollar or more into a basket, what the group calls “Happy Dollars.” At the end of the year, one of the members’ cards is drawn and that member chooses a charity to which the Happy Dollars will be donated.

The $170 Happy Dollars raised in 2012 were presented Jan. 2 to Hospice of Washington County.

Sue Edwards of Healed By Hand Therapeutic Massage & Reiki chose to donate the money to the Frederic H. Kass III, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund, which supports local students pursuing careers in health care. Edwards feels strongly that massage therapy belongs in the health care category and recommended that two high school students she knows apply for the scholarship — one will be studying massage therapy and the other will be studying physical therapy.

The members of the BNI Hagerstown Wednesday Lunch Group, all of whom contributed to the Happy Dollar fund, are Carlos Soto, Geeks-On-Call, chapter president; Mark Trent, Medicare Supplement Services, chapter vice president; Jim Fritsch, First Financial Group, chapter secretary/treasurer; Edwards; April Krabal, My Bank!
