MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A hastily formed group dubbed “Moms for Manchin” is planning to counter a Second Amendment, gun-rights group’s planned demonstration Saturday outside U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin’s office in Martinsburg with a rally of its own.

“We want to be silent supporters (of Manchin) for the stance he has taken,” said Heather Marshall, president of the Berkeley County Democratic Women’s Club.

The protest outside Manchin’s office and Second Amendment rally planned by members of the West Virginia Citizens Defense League is set to begin at 1 p.m. outside the federal building and courthouse at 217 W. King St.

The rally, on what is being touted nationally as online Gun Appreciation Day (http://gunappreciationday.com), comes three weeks after Second Amendment supporters rallied outside U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito’s office on Foxcroft Avenue in Martinsburg on Dec. 29.

Marshall acknowledged that she previously has been critical of Manchin’s position on women’s rights and other issues, but commended the Democratic senator for “the conversation he is willing to have about gun legislation.”

Since learning about the planned Second Amendment Rally on Wednesday night, Marshall said she has reached out to a number of groups in the community to invite them to take be part of “a silent presence.”

“I really want it to be nonconfrontational,” Marshall said.

“Moms for Manchin” is planning to gather across King Street from the federal building outside the former YMCA and city hall building.

“The response has been awesome,” Marshall said. “Everybody’s been super positive about it.”
