Girls Basketball: Panthers take fight away from Warriors

BOONSBORO — The Boonsboro girls basketball team fell behind early and could not recover on Tuesday as North Carroll ran off with a 53-38 victory.

“We weren’t aggressive offensively in the first half,” Boonsboro coach Sam Connelly said. “We didn’t attack the zone at all. I was impressed with the way that North Carroll moved the ball on offense. They made the extra pass.”

The Panthers’ defense was prepared for the Warriors.

“You can’t go man-to-man against Boonsboro, because they will eat you up alive,” North Carroll coach Shawn Minnier said. “You have to be able to take away the pick and roll. We were able to do that tonight. You have to mix up your defenses. We used an effective zone defense against them.”

Megan Heindel collected 18 points, seven rebounds and six steals for North Carroll (9-5). Heindel also had three of the team’s six 3-pointers. Cidney McFarland contributed 15 points and eight assists, while Blake Schildhauer grabbed six rebounds.

“We played very good defense,” Minnier said. “That is what we wanted to do. Boonsboro has got a good team. We knew that we had to stop their shooters. We shot the ball well. When we did well on the defensive end, the momentum swung in our favor.

We were able to push the ball on the offensive end. We got some transition points off of our steals,” Minnier said.

Shannon O’Brien and Claudia Jenkins were the top scorers for Boonsboro (8-4) with seven points each. Tiffanie Bowman pulled down seven rebounds and O’Brien grabbed five rebounds for the Warriors, while Morgan Angle dished off four assists, Kaylah Green made four steals and Jenkins added three steals.

Heindel scored seven points during the first quarter to enable North Carroll to build a 14-5 lead.

Just 24 seconds into the second quarter, Heindel connected on a 3-pointer to extend the Panthers’ lead to 17-5. Heindel and Lister scored eight points each in the period to help North Carroll increase its advantage to 38-16 by halftime.

The Warriors outscored the Panthers 15-8 during the fourth quarter to reduce the final deficit to 15 points.

“We didn’t guard well in the first half,” Connelly said. “We missed some easy outside shots and then we didn’t play defense. They transitioned on us. I am proud of the bench for coming back in the second half. They played with energy that we were missing in the first half.”
