Violet Elizabeth Sweeney, 90, formerly of Hagerstown, Md., died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at Twin Oaks Retirement Village in Williamsport, Md., surrounded by her family.

Born Oct. 30, 1922, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Malvin F. and Ida Hermie Mason Sweeney.

Violet was a graduate of Hagerstown High School Class of 1941 and the Washington County School of Nursing Class of 1944.

She was employed with the Washington County Hospital Staff Nurses from 1944 to 1946, office nurse for Dr. William W. Noel, D.D.S. from 1946 to 1973, Washington County Hospital Central Service assistant supervisor from 1974 to 1985, she retired in 1985. In 1988 January-July she worked part-time at Washington County Hospital in extended care.

She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Queen Esther No. 3, where she held the positions of treasurer and worthy matron.

She was one of the original volunteers for Hospice of Washington County.

She is survived by four nieces, Beverly Fisher of Martinsburg, W.Va., Donna Frotton and husband Art of Finksburg, Md., Karen Fulwiler and husband Arlen of Ijamsville, Md., and Gail L. Hess and husband Bob of McGaheysville, Va.; a nephew, Mike Sweeney and wife Becky of Hagerstown; many grand-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald Sweeney, Lawrence Sweeney and Carl Sweeney.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. L. Patrick Ricker will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD  21742 or Williamsport Retirement Village, in memory of Violet, 154 N. Artizan St., Williamsport, MD 21795.
