William W. Long III

William W. “Bill” Long III, 80, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at the Meritus Medical Center.

Born Monday, June 6, 1932, in Keyser, W.Va., he was the son of the late William W. Long Jr. and the late Alyce (Cauldwell) Wagner.

He attended Potomac State College and West Virginia University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed as a mechanical engineer with Fairchild Aircraft and later retired from the Pangborn Corporation after 41 years.

Bill was a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 and volunteered with the Robinwood Early Learning Center and at Funkstown Elementary. Bill enjoyed aircraft and had his pilot’s license and was an avid amateur radio operator and Redskins football fan.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Anita L. Long; three daughters, Debra S. Grove, husband James and son Jamie of Baltimore, Md., Sandra L. Reeder, husband Ted and children Ashley, Grayson and Bryce of Hagerstown, Krista J. Bowers, husband Jeff and children Ally and Andrew of Smithsburg, Md., brother-in-law, Gary Ack of Keyser, and one niece and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Diane Ack.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Randall S. Reid officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
