Tractor-trailer accident closes I-81 overnight in W.Va.

January 15, 2013

MARLOWE, W.Va. — Southbound Interstate 81 at Exit 23 (U.S. 11) was closed for more than 10 hours Monday night and Tuesday morning after a tractor-trailer hauling fish wrecked and landed on its side Monday night, West Virginia State Police said.

The crash was reported at 9:14 p.m. Monday at the on-ramp from U.S. 11 to southbound I-81 near the 23-mile marker, a Berkeley County Emergency Services spokeswoman said.

Both southbound lanes had reopened by 8 a.m. Tuesday, state police said.

Southbound traffic was being routed off I-81 at Exit 23 onto U.S. 11 and back onto the interstate at Exit 20 (Spring Mills) while the accident scene was cleared.

The driver of the rig was taken to a hospital.

The accident took place in a construction zone where I-81 is being widened to six lanes and new bridges are being built. That project is expected to be completed by September, a state highway department official said this week.
