CASCADE — One person died and another was taken to a hospital after a head-on collision Sunday morning in the 14400 block of MacAfee Hill Road near the Fort Ritchie Community Center, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Sun Winstead, 62, of Waynesboro, Pa., was pronounced dead at the scene, Deputy 1st Class Carly Hose said in a news release.

Jason Belcher, 42, also of Waynesboro, was transported to Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown and later taken to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, authorities said.

Belcher was listed in critical condition at the center, a spokeswoman said Sunday night.

At about 10 a.m., Belcher was driving north on MacAfee Hill Road in a 2009 Kia sedan when a southbound 2002 Honda sedan, driven by Winstead, crossed the center line and struck the Kia head-on, Hose said.

Winstead’s body will be transported to the medical examiner’s office in Baltimore for an autopsy, she said.

James Ulrich, chief of operations for Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services Inc., said both people were trapped inside their vehicles and had to be extricated when emergency responders arrived.

The roadway was closed while an accident reconstruction team from the Washington County sheriff’s office investigated the crash, which was near the Cascade American Legion, Ulrich said.
