Karen D. Cook is the new executive director at Memorial Recreation Center in Hagerstown.

She replaces Loretta Wright at the North Avenue youth center.

Cook said she has received support and encouragement from previous and current staff, board members and community members and is looking forward to the challenge of the position.

Breakfast planned

The Women of Ebenezer AME Church, 26 W. Bethel St., are gearing up for the 2013 Women’s Day and will start the new year off with hosting a breakfast Saturday at 8 a.m.

The menu includes eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes and onions, sausage gravy, biscuit, orange juice and coffee. Tickets cost $6.

On Sunday following the morning worship service, the women will sell steamers. The lunch will include two steamers, chips and soda for $5.

Art exhibit

Just Lookin’ Gallery will hold its 15th annual “New Year — New Visions” art exhibit.

The exhibit opens Saturday, Jan. 19, and continues through Monday, Jan. 21. A reception will be held at noon and at 6 p.m. each day. 


This year’s show includes works by social expressionist Charly Palmer, oil paintings by Jamaican born artist Michael Escoffery, 3-D art quilts from Houston artist Carolyn Crump, expressionistic woodcuts from Dallas artist Evita Tezeno, pencil realism by Canadian artist Michael C. Gibson and mixed-media by Nashville artist Jamaal Sheats.

Curtis Woody’s “quilt” paintings will also be on display. His one-man show is titled “A Struggle for Dignity: An Artistic Exploration of Slavery and Emancipation.” He will discuss his inspiration and techniques during the opening reception.

Master of clay Andreas Goff will demonstrate his sculpture methods during the closing reception.

The gallery is at 40 Summit Ave. in Hagerstown.

Basketball tournament to celebrate MLK  Day

The MLK Day of Service Business Basketball Tournament will be held Monday, Jan. 21 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Martin Luther King Gymnasium.

The tournament will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. 

The tournament slogan is “Enter a Team, Support the Dream.”

Proceeds from the tournament will help fund an outdoor basketball court at Memorial Recreation Center and support future volunteer projects.

Registration is limited to eight businesses.

The format will be a five-on-five, co-ed, single- elimination tournament. 

The tournament is jointly sponsored by Memorial Recreation and Volunteer Washington County.
