A disabled train blocking a Norfolk Southern railroad crossing at Maugansville Road northwest of Hagerstown could be there for a while, a Washington County Emergency Services supervisor said Friday night.

The road has been shut down since about 5 p.m., between Maugans Avenue and Garden View Road. The initial report from fire and train officials was that a wheel on the train “fell off,” the supervisor said earlier Friday.

As of 6 p.m., the train’s conductor was waiting for the arrival of his supervisors, which may take up to two hours, the supervisor said.

On top of that, necessary repairs could take anywhere from 10 to 15 hours to complete, the supervisor said, according to what he was being told from officials at the scene.

Washington County officials set up roadblocks and detour signs to steer motorists around the crossing, the supervisor said about 7:20 p.m.

The rail crossing is located in the 13700 block of Maugansville Road.
