GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Everything looked easy for the Waynesboro Indians on Thursday night. And for the most part, it was as they took down the Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils 48-31 in a Mid-Penn Colonial wrestling clash.

The two teams have had contrasting years, and the Blue Devils (0-4, 0-4) were not able to match up against a superior Waynesboro (6-3, 3-1) squad.

The Blue Devils started off the night in good fashion in the 113-pound weight class. Greencastle’s Cody Carbaugh was able to work over Waynesboro’s John Atkinson for a first-period pin, giving the Blue Devils an early 6-0 lead.

The bout at 120 seemed poised to deliver the same results for the Blue Devils as Wade Rider built a 5-3 lead against Waynesboro’s Aaron Layman through the first two periods. However, Layman struck back midway through the third period, pinning Rider at the 4:45 mark to tie the score.

“They’ve got some very good kids at 106, 113 and 120,” Waynesboro head coach Eric Mowen said.

Carbaugh and Rider impressed Mowen, but after their efforts, the Blue Devils faltered.

The Indians went up 18-6 after forfeits at 126 and 132 and then picked up back-to-back first-period pins by Kenyon Cuka at 138 and Jesse Smith at 145 to extend Waynesboro’s advantage to 30-6.

The Blue Devils answered in the next match as Ryan Wolf scored a first-period pin at 152 to reduce the deficit to 30-12.

After Waynesboro went up 36-12 with a win by forfeit by Aiden Smith at 160, Greencastle’s Jensen Stoner brought the Blue Devils closer as he overcame a 4-3 first-period deficit against Patrick Wade, prevailing with a 9-8 decision.

Wins by forfeit by Greencastle’s Stefan Johnson at 182 and Jared Starliper at 195 cut Waynesboro’s lead to nine at 36-27.

But the Indians proved to be too tough. Waynesboro’s Andrew Paterno pinned Connor Bryant in 48 seconds at 220, and then Shawn Robinson earned his first high school victory, pinning Greencastle’s Dwight Henning in 1:34 at 285.

“That’s real big, getting your first win,” Mowen said. “(Robinson) took the kid down, worked a power half and turned the kid.”

Greencastle’s Wyatt Binkley finished the scoring off for the Blue Devils with a commanding 11-1 victory over Ryan Neff at 106.

The two teams return to action Friday at the Hub Cup at North Hagerstown.
