Mail Call - Jan. 10

January 09, 2013

“Funny that I went to school, back in the 1990s, God was still in the schools, we had guns and no cops. Now we don’t have any God in schools, but we have guns and cops. What does this say to the world?”
— Hagerstown

“NRA spokesman Wayne LaPierre says, ‘The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.’ LaPierre’s goal is to arm as many ‘good guys’ as possible at all times, because no one knows when the ‘bad guy’ will attack. Problem is that everyone packing a gun thinks he is the good guy, even if he is an unstable vigilante itching to pull the trigger on anyone he perceives to be the ‘bad guy.’ No, thank you, Mr. LaPierre, we’ve already experienced that situation, in the shooting of Trayvon Martin.”
— Hagerstown

“On Thursday, Jan. 3, the headline of The Herald-Mail was ‘Same-sex couples wed in county.’ Of all the national and world problems, isn’t there something more ‘newsworthy’ than this? Herald-Mail, you can do better.”
— Hagerstown

“I have worked with Andy Sargent. He is a stand-up guy and is the perfect choice for the city’s downtown manager. Hagerstown needs someone who knows how to get things done. Hopefully he can help save the Suns.”
— Hagerstown

“I would like to correct the person who wrote the comment about the congresswoman, on gun control. Her name is Congresswoman Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., and she is not a Republican. I repeat, not a Republican. Please get your facts straight before you call in a comment for all to read. All too often, people get things wrong when they call in articles, and people who are not informed believe it.”
— Shippensburg, Pa.

“So the Waynesboro council said no sledding at Memorial Park, due to a new fence installed at the ball field. Well, there are more people and kids that sled there during the year than there are ball games on that ball field. As a matter of fact, I don’t know of any games played on that field. I think this is a no-brainer, dumb move that needs to be corrected.”
— Waynesboro, Pa.

“I believe the fiscal cliff drama was a planned event by both parties, to avoid the wrath of the voters. The Dems have not seen a tax they didn’t like or a cause they didn’t throw money at, but did not want to be blamed for raising taxes, and the Repubs knew they could not prevent taxes from going up on everyone, so they held out. Both parties are at fault. Did President  Obama really sign the bill with an electronic pen?”
— Hagerstown

“The letter from Mr. Cushwa on Jan. 3 does make you wonder about the developer who sold property to the city at a huge profit — not once, but twice. It seems the county government can only focus on one thing; in this case, the stadium, and falls through the cracks on everything else, costing the taxpayers big-time. That nice developer who is devoted to the community should be fixing up downtown.”
— Hagerstown

“These people who say guns don’t kill people, it’s people who kill people, I don’t know what they’re thinking. If people, if someone took, instead of using a gun, used a pillow, would anyone be dead? No, it’s the gun that is killing the people. And a bomb, other than a bomb, a gun has the potential to kill more people than anybody. So that’s why they shouldn’t just be given to anyone.”
— Hagerstown

“These folks having babies are expecting the government to foot the bill is a major problem. It’s just not walking away from the hospital free and clear. They’re also milking the system the entire time these kids are in school. It’s a major problem, but the system has been put in place that they can do this. It’s time this changes. I don’t care if you live in Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia or Pennsylvania, these kids are putting a burden on our society.”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“To the article in Mail Call about John McCain being criticized: Nobody’s criticizing him for his war record, for his service to the country, but we are criticizing him for his actions in the Senate. And since he lost the election he has been nothing but a crybaby, and I don’t care what you say, as far as me being in the service, I served my country just as well as he did. So he got shot down. So be it. Far as I’m concerned, since President Obama got elected, he’s been nothing but against him and trying to ridicule his policies, and everything else. So as far as I’m concerned he’s a crybaby, he and his couple of buddies with him.”
— Hagerstown

“To the Dec. 28 Hagerstown caller already wishing for an Obama third term: We fortunately have a little thing called the 22nd Amendment to our Constitution. Even with all the low information, voters out there signing a petition, repeal or revision would require a two-thirds majority vote in both Houses of Congress to even propose a change, and that’s just for starters. It’s too bad we don’t have term limits for senators and congressmen. Perhaps we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in now.”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“Last night on the news it showed where the Democrats gave a $445 million tax break to Hollywood. Pork is included in the tax bill. Hollywood and Demos go hand-in-hand. Can’t blame this on Repubs. In the stimulus in ’09, Demos gave Hollywood a $346 million tax break. Dems talking about Repubs for the rich, rich should pay their ‘fair share.’ Hypocrites are paying liberal Hollywood for the campaign cash, on our dime.”
— Hagerstown

“I see that Hagerstown has a new downtown manager. Is downtown sacred? To be fair to all of Hagerstown, we should also need a North End manager, a South End manager, an East End manager and a West End manager. This useless government appointment is the type of causes for the fiscal cliff.”
