CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — An assistant district attorney in Franklin County, Pa., this week announced his intention to seek election for a judge position in the Court of Common Pleas.

Jeremiah Zook is running for a vacancy in the 39th Judicial District, which serves Franklin and Fulton counties. That vacancy was created with the retirement of Richard J. Walsh.

“My entire legal career has been spent in the courtroom — a litigator presenting and arguing cases as a private practitioner in Waynesboro, as an assistant public defender, and for the last seven years as an assistant district attorney for Franklin County,” Zook said in a news release.

Zook lives in Guilford Township with his wife, Melanie, and their three children. He is a registered Republican, but judge candidates can cross-file in Pennsylvania to appear on both Democratic and GOP ballots.

Zook, who attended University of Akron School of Law in Ohio, temporarily stepped down from his role as first district attorney in an effort to comply with federal law while running for office. He is a former assistant public defender for Franklin County and has been with the prosecutor’s office for seven years.

In the news release, Zook said he has acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to make serious decisions in any type of case. He cited his work in front of juries.

“As a judicial candidate, I cannot ethically tell anyone how I, if elected as a judge, would rule in a particular case or on a particular issue. But I can promise you that if elected, I am committed to the rule of law, whether that is in criminal law, civil or family law,” he said.

Zook said he wants to be a judge because it is “the best investment” he can make in the community.

Pennsylvania’s primary election will be May 21. The municipal election is scheduled for Nov. 5.
