Mail Call - Jan. 4

January 03, 2013

“To the caller who recently said they were offended by the Christmas decorations at the Department of Motor Vehicles: I would like them to realize that this is a season for all beliefs to celebrate in the season, and the residents here in Washington County mostly do celebrate Christmas. So you should please not be offended, and be happy that love is being shown.”
— Williamsport

“To the caller that doesn’t think John McCain should be loved: During my military service, I saw a lot of examples of exceptional intelligence, compassion and common sense. John McCain exemplified all of those and many more. I think this individual that called in about John McCain needs to look at his own military service. Maybe he didn’t have any examples.”
— Brightwood Acres East

“Hagerstown caller, Webster’s says an entitlement is ‘to furnish with proper grounds for seeking or claiming something.’ You are correct, you worked since age 15, so you certainly qualify for your Social Security disability. It is yours. President Obama misuses this term. People who can work but won’t, women having children they cannot afford, food programs for those who can afford to buy their children’s lunch, health care and food stamps for illegals, money for overseas, domestic abortions — these people aren’t entitled to these freebies. However, they do get Democrats’ votes.”
— Hagerstown

“Putting prayer back in the schools, more gun laws, and addressing mental illnesses will not prevent future mass killings. There will always be evil. Maybe if we put bars at the school windows and bullet-proof glass with armed guards, or created gated communities for our schools, we could prevent some of the deeds, but there will always be students who will commit evil acts from within.”
— Hagerstown

“In response to the caller from Halfway being charged a late fee by Potomac Edison: I, too, was charged a late fee — on a credit balance. They refunded it after I called, only to do it again the following month. I then realized they never bothered to read the meter when I moved into my home, or months after. Their ‘estimates’ left me with a $360 bill. So last month I sent in a customer reading on time. ... What happened to being able to pay our actual usage?”
— Hagerstown

“I am not a fan of or supporter of the NRA, but I think maybe they have a valid point. We in the U.S. live in a culture obsessed with violence; fed by movies, TV, games and so forth. We should remember that we reap what we sow.”
— Halfway

“I just want to congratulate The Herald-Mail on the wonderful articles they had in Monday’s paper, on readers sharing their ornaments, and also on the first toy that they got. Those were two marvelous articles and were very positive, and made my day on Monday.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m calling to the Boonsboro post office. I want to thank them for sending me a card telling me that my mail’s already chewed up, cut up, and it’s that way when it gets to the post office.”
— Dual Highway

“So guns don’t kill people. They are a weapon. If the kid had shown up in school in Connecticut with a pillow, how many would have been killed? No one needs an automatic or semiautomatic weapon that holds more than four shots. This is what will save people.”
— Hagerstown

“I was just reading about the intruder going into the elementary school and killing all these children, and how sad that is. But people are talking about security, and they had the highest security that there was, and he shot the window out, and shot the security up. So basically there isn’t really anything that’s real secure, except just being alert every day.”
— Hagerstown

“How are they driving: Twelve twits a-tweeting, 11 clueless phoning, 10 drunks a-driving, nine losers lane-changing, eight fools free-ranging, seven stoners death-wishing, six idiots busy eating, five bullies tailgating, four dweebs running red lights, the sleepy zoning out, few dimming high-beams, one doing the speed limit ...”
— Hedgesville, W.Va.

“The political left and anti-gunners are on the move again. The killings in Connecticut were horrendous, but why would a mother give guns to a son who had known mental problems? Why wasn’t he in a facility where he couldn’t hurt anybody? Perhaps he watched too much TV. There is not a day goes by that you cannot see someone getting shot, or pools of blood on TV. Some of the movies are just as highly violent. People tend to emulate what they hear and see. Remember, a gun doesn’t fire by itself. Think about it.”
— Waynesboro, Pa.

“I’m calling concerning the Toys for Tots program. I’m not complaining about it, just adding to it. The Marine Corps League wasn’t mentioned, about their contribution; the many hours it takes to pick up the donated toys, the miles the Marines drive to collect them, then turn the toys over to The Salvation Army for distribution.”
— Hagerstown

“I travel Pennsylvania Avenue daily, and occasionally Northern Avenue. I am so sick and tired of impatient drivers who don’t obey the speed limit, and continually hug my bumper, flash their lights and honk their horn. I drive the speed limit, not only because it’s the law, but also because I do not want to get a ticket. This happens every day, and I never see police presence any time of the day along these streets. With the schools, and children walking and crossing the streets, I believe it is essential for the speed limits to be enforced.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m watching O’Reilly tonight, because there’s really nothing on TV, and he’s reminiscing over the last 10 years of interviews. Well, he had Michael Moore. I don’t believe in hardly anything he says. Phil Donahue, the same way with him. But I do believe them tonight, when they both said we should have never went into Iraq. That’s Bush’s blunder. I agree with those two guys 100 percent, and I’m a Republican.”
— Williamsport

“Recently the Hagerstown Aviation Museum has been in contact with somebody in Florida about purchasing the last C-123 for the exhibit out here. It’s time for all of us citizens, especially old Fairchild workers and all these companies that made money off Fairchild over the years, to contribute to this. We need to bring that home and put it in the museum, so, also let’s everybody pitch in. Your donations is well appreciated.”
— Leitersburg

“Congratulations to Boonsboro High on winning the state blue ribbon. That’s a big accomplishment. Is South County ready for the influx of new residents? This makes that area even more attractive for homebuyers.”
— Hagerstown

“Who thinks the Suns will save Hagerstown? Where were all you people when the ice cream plant ... closed? Greencastle saved the World Kitchen, by cutting their taxes. And everybody is building in Martinsburg. A long time ago, the dog track wasn’t on 40, NASCAR wasn’t on 66. Las Vegas was glad for NASCAR, made $6 million their first race, and it would have filled all your restaurants, motels and everything, all — you took the fairgrounds ... could have been slot machines and a racetrack.”
— Mount Lena

“So the NRA wants more guns, the same way during the Cold War that each country thought having more bombs would solve the problem. We know it didn’t, and neither will more guns. Oh, and by the way, there was an armed security guard at Columbine that day.”
— Hagerstown

“I keep reading and hearing that these hybrid cars don’t cost a lot of money, because they don’t use a lot of gas. I wish somebody would please tell me how much they’re paying for the electricity to run the car.”
— Halfway

“In my day we locked up the crazy people and let folks’ guns alone. And school shootings were not only unheard of, they were unthinkable.”
— Hancock
