Stephen Bernadyn, 97, of Raleigh, N.C., passed away peacefully at his son's home in Raleigh, on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012.

Born July 29, 1915, in Plainfield, N.J., he was the son of the late John and Julia Bernadyn.

Steve was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Madeline Gozora Bernadyn; sister, Francis Golden; brother, John Bernadyn; and granddaughter, Julia Morin.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Steve graduated from Bound Brook High School, and received a bachelor's degree in business from Rutgers University. 

He worked for 38 years for Mack Trucks, Inc., in New Brunswick, N.J., Plainfield, N.J., and Hagerstown, Md., where he helped with hiring personnel and the start-up of the Hagerstown plant in 1961. Steve retired in 1975 and moved to Seminole, Fla., where he was very active in the St. Petersburg Polish Club, serving as president and treasurer. He was a member of the American Legion, and a third degree member in the Knights of Columbus.

He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Williamsport, Md.

Steve is survived by a son, Stephen Bernadyn and wife, Paula, of Raleigh; daughters, Patricia (Bernadyn) Jones and husband, Ernest, and Kathleen (Bernadyn) Morin and husband, John, all of Hagerstown; and dearly loved by seven grandchildren, Ernest Jones, Timothy Jones, Caroline (Jones) Milne, Kristi (Bernadyn) West, Emily (Morin) Britton, Matthew Morin and Lauren Bernadyn; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 32 E. Potomac St., Williamsport, with Rev. Msgr. Alfred E. Smith as celebrant. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, from 6 to 8 p.m. Prayers will be offered at 6:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial contribution be made to Hospice of Washington County, Inc., 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
