Mail Call - Dec. 27

December 27, 2012

“I would like to thank the organizers of the Maugansville Ruritan Christmas evening. The Santa goes above and beyond, by reading a story and making contact with each and every child. The volunteers, young and old, are very thoughtful, and the activities, snacks and crafts are nicely done. I took my children this year and last, and just wanted to acknowledge how nice it is.”

— Hagerstown

“Anyone hear from the NRA lately? Yes, other ways can be used to kill, but the mass murderers are using guns. I would like to hear the NRA say they are sorry for that, but then it is controlled by the gun manufacturers, isn’t it? It’s past time to change something. Those little kids were worth more than all the guns in the world.”

— Greencastle, Pa.

“I think that it’s plain ignorant of the news people, going up to these little children after this shootout, and interviewing them at the school. I think that is plain ignorant, and they should be charged with child neglect. You don’t torture someone after they’ve been through all that.”

— Hagerstown

“Words cannot express how I feel, watching this tragedy in Connecticut with the children being shot by a gunman. But now I think it’s time, it’s time that we take a serious step to put an end to gun violence. President Obama, it’s time to repeal the Second Amendment. Only when guns are illegal will gun crime finally stop in this country. How many more mass shootings and tragedies will it take? Again, President Obama, repeal the Second Amendment now.”

— Hagerstown

“You know, the idiot that did this shooting in the Connecticut school, I’ll guarantee you I’m right on this. This kind of thing all started when those people who were out there and didn’t like prayer in school, didn’t like God in anything, that’s what started this all. There’s just no discipline anymore. Too many people are working jobs, not being home with their kids when they should be, not paying attention to them. But it all started when the people wanted to take (prayer out of school).”

— Sharpsburg

“For you people out there who like to cut up Sarah Palin and criticize her all the time: I’d just as soon have her as a vice president than the present vice president we have, in Joe Biden. For over 30 years, Joe pulled the wool over the eyes of the Delaware voters, and if he had to go outside the state of Delaware for votes, he couldn’t get elected dog catcher.”

— Hagerstown

“Well, there’s another Second Amendment rights shooting. Second Amendment, 20 kids dead in elementary school. Here’s your Second Amendment rights. No, but let’s not have any gun laws. Everybody needs an AK-47. Whatever. Or you take Fox’s view: He could have killed all those people with a knife. It’s time to change the laws. Nobody’s saying you can’t have a gun, but you can’t have AKs and handguns. AK-47s and handguns are for one thing only, to kill innocent lives. It’s time to put a stop to this nonsense.”

— Hagerstown

“Several callers have mentioned that employees are entitled to unemployment benefits because employees pay into the fund. Employees do not pay into the fund through withholding like they do for Social Security and Medicare. The employer is the sole contributor to the unemployment fund in Maryland.”

— Hagerstown

“I was wondering if someone could help me out and explain to me why gas prices keep dropping, but diesel prices stay the same. I’m a diesel consumer, and I don’t understand why gas is so cheap and diesel is so expensive.”

— Clear Spring

“Sarah Palin has gotten a lot of negative comments in Mail Call lately, and I’m sorry to see that. She’s a very sincere person, and frankly, as a Maryland resident, I would much rather have her representing me in the U.S. Congress than I would the two current U.S. senators that we have.”

— Washington County

“If anybody ... if they see a teacher, walk up and thank them for taking care of our kids, because most of them are real fine people. And look at the ones who gave their lives for these kids, the little kids who got killed out there in (Newtown).”

— Hagerstown
