John Lafferty Griffith Jr., 84, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at the Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, surrounded by his loving family.

Born Sunday, March 4, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of the late John L. Griffith and the late Sibyl (Crippen) Griffith, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis W. Griffith, in 2009.

He is survived by his children, Richard K. Griffith and wife, Nancy, of Martinsburg, W.Va., Douglas M. Griffith and wife, Jill, of Frederick, Md., and Lori S. Monnett and husband, Mark, of Hagerstown. Jack is also survived by his three grandchildren, Allison Hartshorn of Hagerstown, Sean Griffith of Baltimore, Md., and Mary Kathleen Griffith of Frederick.

Jack was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the Japanese Theatre. He graduated from Westminster College in 1952 and was employed in sales and management positions with General Fireproofing Co., Youngstown, Ohio, Latrobe Steel Co., Latrobe, Pa. and Pangborn Corporation of Hagerstown. He later founded his own company, Audicom in Hagerstown, before becoming a part of Griffith & Coe Advertising, where he retired in 1997.

He was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, where he was a lay reader and usher. Jack was also past president of the Greater Latrobe Music Assn., member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, past director of the Maryland Theatre and Turning Point of Western Maryland. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and the Hagerstown Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow.

Jack loved to golf, bowl and was an avid professional football fan. He took his first golf lessons from Deacon Palmer, father of Arnold Palmer, at Latrobe Country Club, Latrobe. He was also a member of multiple bowling teams in both Pennsylvania and Maryland. The most important things in his life were his wife and family, to whom he showed extraordinary love. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Services will be held on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Mark A. Sandell officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Interment will be in the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
