LIBERTYTOWN, Md. — During a holiday season marred by tragedy, violence and economic turmoil, Aspen Tree Co. proves there’s still goodness and humanity left in this world.

Just two weeks shy of Christmas, the local tree services company provided tree removal services free of charge to a couple whose medical expenses left their wallets tight this holiday.

After seeing a coupon ad in the local Valpak, Anthony Sos of Frederick, Md., contacted Aspen Tree Co. for an estimate on removing a honey locust tree too close to his home. Anthony and his wife, Sandra, signed a contract for the tree removal for Dec. 19, but a couple weeks later, Anthony had to cancel the job. Sandra had a heart attack and doctors discovered a major blockage in an artery going to her brain. As a result, she had to have bypass surgery.

Facing substantial medical expenses, Anthony explained his situation to Aspen Co-Owner Katie Mester and ended his contract. Shortly after, Katie called back to say that she and her husband/co-owner Jason would remove the tree for free.

On Dec. 14, Anthony and Sandra’s 44th wedding anniversary, Jason and his crew spent four to five hours roping the tree down in sections, chipping and hauling away the brush, cutting the trunk wood into fireplace blocks and grinding the resulting stump. The full price of the original contract was $1,250, discounted to $1,000, but the Soses were charged nothing.

Katie visited the day of the removal with her two young children, an anniversary card and gift for the Soses.
