Margaret  "Peggy" Burns, 73, of Greencastle, Pa., and formerly of Uniontown, Pa., passed away Dec. 24, 2012, at Mount Macrina Manor, Uniontown, surrounded by loved ones, after courageously battling cancer.

Peggy was born Jan. 21, 1939, the youngest child of Andrew and Lydia (Downey) Shimko of West Leisenring, Pa. She graduated from North Union High School with the Class of 1957.

Prior to relocating to Greencastle in 1989, Peggy was an employee for many years of the Michael Berkowitz Co., and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church. While residing in Greencastle, Peggy was employed by Rocky Ridge, then Hub Label, before retiring due to her illness. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Mark the Evangelist Parish, attending daily Mass as often as possible.

Peggy had a fondness for dogs and cats, providing a loving home for many over the years; as well as a talent for baking, with her nut and poppy seed rolls being family favorites.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Joseph and Francis "Flicker" Shimko; infant sister, Mary Catherine; and her former husband, James E. Burns. A brother, Andrew Shimko of Uniontown, followed her in death on Christmas Day.

Peggy will be sadly missed by her son, James M. Burns of Uniontown; brother, John (Jack) and wife, Phyllis, of Solon, Ohio; sister, Patricia Furin of Uniontown; and companion, Donald Upole of Greencastle; special neighbor, C.J. Barnhart; and many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends in both Uniontown and Greencastle.

Friends are being received at Kezmarsky Funeral Home, 71 Pennsylvania Ave., Uniontown, on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and Friday morning until 10 a.m., when Prayers of Transfer will be said, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. James D. Tringhese as celebrant. Interment will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown, Pa.
