8 - St. Maria Goretti’s boys basketball team edges Loyola 54-53 to end its 47-game losing streak in the Baltimore Catholic League.

9 - Former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin is voted into Baseball Hall of Fame. … Alabama beats LSU 21-0 for BCS title.

11 - South Hagerstown’s Tayana Stewart scores 26 points to lead Rebels’ girls over Clear Spring, 79-23.

13 - In boys basketball, North Hagerstown downs Clear Spring 60-47 and South Hagerstown beats Brunswick, 58-39.

14 - In wrestling, James Buchanan wins the Rebel Duals. … Saint James’ Obi Enechionyia has a third straight triple-double with 15 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks in a 75-72 win over St. Mary’s Ryken in boys hoops.

16 - In men’s hoops, Hagerstown Community College loses rivalry battle to Allegany College, 86-78.

17 - In boys basketball, Devon King scores 26 points to lead South Hagerstown past Frederick, 67-59.

18 - In wrestling, North Hagerstown blows out South 60-15 for 20th straight win over Rebels.

19 - In boys basketball, South Hagerstown beats North, 66-50.

20 - In indoor track & field, Boonsboro’s girls and Williamsport’s boys win team titles at county championships.

21 - HCC women beat Howard 61-58 for coach Marlys Palmer’s 600th win.

22 - New England wins AFC championship, 23-20. … Joe Paterno dies at age 85.

24 - In boys basketball, Smithsburg’s Trent Springs scores a career-high 31 points in a 72-57 win over Williamsport.

26 - In boys basketball, Broadfording’s Mawdo Sallah has a triple-double with 21 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocks in a 54-33 win over Maryland School for the Deaf.

27 - In girls basketball, South Hagerstown’s Katrice Dickson scores 29 points in a 62-41 win over Williamsport.

31 - In girls basketball, Williamsport upsets North Hagerstown, 45-36.


2 - In wrestling, North Hagerstown beats Catoctin 42-30 in a battle of MVAL Antietam unbeatens.

3 - In boys basketball, North Hagerstown’s J. R. Railing scores a career-high 27 points as the Hubs beat Boonsboro, 64-53.

5 - New York Giants defeat New England 21-17 to win Super Bowl XLVI.

7 - In boys basketball, North Hagerstown edges Smithsburg 89-86 in overtime.

8 - In wrestling, North Hagerstown wins its first 4A/3A West region dual meet title since 2000.

14 - West Virginia University finalizes financial deal that allows it to jump to Big 12 Conference.

16 - In girls basketball, Clear Spring’s Jess Barnhart scores 28 points in a 57-33 win over Hancock.

17 - In boys basketball, St. Maria Goretti tops Williamsport 40-35 and North Hagerstown beats Tuscarora, 62-56.

18 - In wrestling, North Hagerstown wins county tournament 196.5 to 162 over Williamsport. … In boys basketball, Southern Fulton wins ICC title 46-43 over Bellwood.

20 - In indoor track & field, Boonsboro’s girls score in every event to win Maryland Cass 1A state title. … Smithsburg’s boys win 1A title, the first by a county boys team indoors.

21 - In girls basketball, Smithsburg rallies from 20 points down to beat North Hagerstown, 56-45.

22 - In women’s basketball, HCC head coach Marlys Palmer wins final home game, 63-33, over NOVA.

23 - In boys basketball, Saint James rallies to beat Flint Hill 77-63 in Mid-Atlantic Conference quarterfinals, the Saints’ first tournament win since 2008.

25 - In boys basketball, Saint James loses MAC title game to Potomac School, 62-60. … In wrestling, North Hagerstown wins Maryland Class 4A/3A West title. … In Mason Dixon Christian Conference basketball tournament finals, Broadfording’s boys lose to New Life 67-66, while Heritage Academy’s girls beat New Life, 40-38.

26 - Washington Nationals sign Ryan Zimmerman to a 6-year, $100 million extension.

27 - Washington County Northstars win second straight Maryland Scholastic Hockey League title with 8-1 victory over Queen Anne’s County. … In girls basketball, South Hagerstown beats Seneca Valley in 3A quarterfinals. … Matt Kenseth wins rain-delayed Daytona 500.

28 - In boys basketball, Smithsburg, Williamsport and South Hagerstown all open state playoffs with victories.
