Homestead credit deadline is Dec. 31

December 25, 2012

BALTIMORE — Homeowners have until Dec. 31 to apply for Maryland’s Homestead Property Tax Credit if they have not done so, according to the state Department of Assessments and Taxation.

The credit was established by state law in 2007 to help homeowners deal with large increases in the assessment on their principal residence, the department’s website says.

The credit limits the increase in taxable assessments each year to a fixed percentage.

All counties and municipalities may not exceed 10 percent in their increase. They also may choose a lower limit.

Washington County, Hagerstown and Smithsburg all have a 5 percent cap, according to a chart posted on the department’s website.

The county cap applies to all other municipalities in Washington County.

Information about the credit is available at 410-767-2165, by sending an email to homestead@dat.state.md.us or going to www.dat.state.md.us/sdatweb/homestead_app.htm.

Mailed applications must be postmarked by Dec. 31.
