Mail Call - Dec. 21

December 20, 2012

“I’m calling Mail Call because people are saying the Democrats are at fault, the Republicans are at fault. It’s just stop and think, look and listen, you’ll see that both are at fault. Neither one of the parties want to do anything to help the U.S. They want to do their own agenda first, and then help themselves. Nobody wants to stand there and say the truth, that they need reform, money need be stop wasted, the taxes need reformed and all this. Stop listening to both sides and start reading and checking yourself.”
— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“To the Sharpsburg caller who is a fan of John McCain: So am I. In 2000, I was furious when the Bush people used dirty tricks to force him out of the presidential campaign. Although a Democrat, I had decided to vote for him. In 2008 I again was leaning in his direction, until he chose Sarah Palin as his running mate. I have never doubted his integrity, but I have at times disagreed with his views on some issues. There will always be detractors. That’s just politics. Don’t let it upset you so much.”
— Williamsport

“We are not self-absorbed over the JFK runners. You don’t have to pick up their trash they leave behind. And you live in Hagerstown, we live in the Downsville area. You don’t have to put up with their traffic.”
— Downsville

“We would all like to revitalize downtown Hagerstown. However, I had a meeting at the courthouse, and parked adjacent to it, in a parking lot. I was gone a little over an hour, and my parking fee was $6. Everywhere downtown charges you to park. Let’s eliminate all parking charges downtown, as a first step to encourage people to come to downtown Hagerstown and revitalize.”
— Hagerstown

“I just picked up The Herald-Mail. I have a suggestion. It’s a little late this year, but this is the month of Christmas, December, and I think it’d be wonderful next year if you could have people write in something special about Christmas in their memories, in Mail Call. I don’t know if it’s too late right now, but I think things would be nice. Get tired of reading about all the politics and different things like that. Merry Christmas.”
— Hagerstown

“This comment is for all the winners who have nothing better to do than complain. Go and volunteer at your local school for a week, or even a day. Perhaps you would not complain that teachers are being overpaid to baby-sit your children. They do a great job on a daily basis, and should get a pat on the back every day.”
— Washington County

“For the person who said Palin never said about seeing (Russia): Go to the ABC News website. The transcript is there. Her words about Russia are: ‘They’re our next door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.’ So she said it. And also, as Katie Couric pointed out, she never could state what newspapers she read. She was completely uninformed of what was going on. Thank God she’s faded into history.”
— Hagerstown

“There’s also something wrong when you live in a trailer with a heat pump, and in three months’ time, your light bill goes from $73 to $117, and you’re the only one that lives in that house. So how is that? And why should I have to pay, when there’s only me here? Why should I have to pay that kind of money?”
— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“Nice article on the 12th, about the stadium. I can only say, as a Washington County and Hagerstown taxpayer, this is the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard. Don’t assume that the stadium authority is going to give you half a million dollars for the next 20 years. And look at the sweetheart deal for somebody. We have so much debt in the county and the city now, it’s time to put a halt to it. What are the financial liabilities right now for the city and Hagerstown?”
— Leitersburg

“Why don’t they just ditch the idea of a new stadium, instead of pitching it? The Suns aren’t that important. Maybe if they were affiliated with the Orioles, it would be different, but with the attendance in the hundreds each night, it isn’t worth the money. It’s too much cost per person. If the owners want to build a new stadium, let the owners build a new stadium. But it’s just a lot better to renovate the old stadium.”
— Hagerstown

“This is to the Clear Spring caller who’s criticizing the Williamsport caller, on the Sarah Palin intelligence issue. Yes, she is correct that Mrs. Palin did not say that she could see Russia from a balcony. She said something worse. She said every time Putin puts his head out the window, where’s he looking at, he’s looking at Alaska and he’s in our airspace. That’s even worse. This woman has proved to be unintelligent on so many levels, you cannot possibly defend her against this Miss Rice, who is a Rhodes scholar and a graduate of Oxford. There’s no way you can compare the two.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m calling in concern about the schools on the, I think it was the Monroe school, the Eastern Elementary. I think somebody needs to go out there a couple days a week and set up a speed trap there. People coming through awful fast. Yesterday somebody got mad because I’m doing the speed limit, and then passed me and cut in front of me to make a right-hand turn. They need to set up radar out there.”
— Hagerstown

“People are still asking where the funds are coming from. What about the hotel/restaurant taxes? This tax was originated to provide income for a new stadium. What would the total amount in that fund be now if the city had not robbed it for other purposes? And why not in the future can the hotel/restaurant taxes be used as funding for the stadium like it was originally set up to do? Can the city be sued? Seems like fiscal impropriety to me.”
