Juvenile playing with lighter caused fire near Hagerstown

A juvenile playing with a lighter caused a minor fire at a two-story townhouse early Thursday in the 17000 block of Apple Blossom Court near Hagerstown, the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office said.

The incident was reported at 2:57 a.m. at Valley Meadow Townhomes, according to a state police news release.

Fire officials said the juvenile ignited the bedding and a mattress in a second-floor bedroom, causing about $500 in damages.

The juvenile was referred to the Department of Juvenile Services, according to the release.

Authorities said a smoke alarm activated.

Nineteen firefighters from Halfway, Funkstown and Williamsport took about five minutes to get the fire under control, the release said.
