Do you hear what I hear?

Chestnuts are roasting, bells are jingling and familiar melodies are marking the season.

Music is synonymous with the holidays and though many of the songs might be all too familiar, they continue to inspire and uplift.

A sortable calendar of concerts has been available this month throughout the Tri-State area and within just a few nights before Christmas the Hagerstown Municipal Band will deliver its own musical message.

It’s “A Hagerstown Holiday: The Hagerstown Municipal Band and Maryland Theatre’s Gift to the City.”

The concert at the historic downtown theatre will be on Sunday, Dec. 23, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

There is no admission charge but seating will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

In addition to music by the municipal band, there will be a performance by the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts Wind Band, an audience sing-along and a narration of “The Night Before Christmas,” the timeless poem of Santa Claus and his December trek around the world celebrating the spirit of giving. The poem will be narrated by Timothy Gotwald, a member of the band’s flute section.

Municipal band director Lynn Lerew said the band is looking forward to its holiday concert.

Lerew said it has been 25 years or more since the 50-member group has performed a Christmas program at The Maryland Theatre.

“We are pleased to be returning to The Maryland Theatre once again and hope that the concert will be well-supported and received by the residents of the greater Hagerstown area,” he said.

The concert will open with three selections performed by the BISFA Wind Band, Lerew said. The 28-piece band features winds, brass and percussion and is under the direction of William Hollin, the school’s lead instrumental music teacher.

“The band will then join us for ‘A Christmas Festival,’ the last selection on our program,” Lerew said.

The opportunity to perform together will be a first for the two bands.

Lerew noted that “last April, the Hagerstown Municipal Band gave a concert at The Maryland Theatre and the Barbara Ingram band performed in advance on that program, also. But they didn’t participate in any of our selections.”

The Hagerstown Municipal Band will fill the theater with a variety of holiday music, including “Fantasy On A Bell Carol,” selections from “Nutcracker Suite” and “March of the Toys.”

Solo vocalists Alexis Barone and David Wenerd will also perform. Alexis will sing “Christmas from the ’50s” and “Grown-Up Christmas List,” while Wenerd will sing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

Wenerd also will lead a carol sing-along, featuring a medley of traditional carols.
