George Washington Howell, 90, of Charlotte Hall, Md., and formerly of Williamsport, Md., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Morningside House Assisted Living in Waldorf, Md.

Born Feb. 2, 1922, in Downsville, Md., he was the son of the late Lee Hampton and Neva Elrita Goen Howell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Cornelia Hancock Howell, on March 24, 2009.

He was a self-employed farmer. After farming for many years, he worked for Landis Tool Co. in Waynesboro, Pa., as a stationary engineer.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of Elks 378 of Hagerstown, Md.

He played music at the C&O Canal basin as a volunteer for the National Park Service for many years and also played for the Olde Trail Ramblers.

He is survived by daughter, Wanda Howell Pingitore and her husband, Vince, of Charlotte Hall; granddaughter, Rachel Pingitore and her husband, Benjamin Buchanan, and their son, Duncan; and grandson, Anthony Pingitore of Charlotte Hall.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Roy, Jesse, Charles, James, Francis, Roscoe, Edgar, Joseph and Benjamin Howell; and sisters, Geneva Shank and Mabel Nalley.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, with the Rev. Ernest E. Witmer officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Saturday from noon to 1 p.m.
