Mail Call - Dec. 19

December 18, 2012

“I recently went out to the motor vehicle administration here in Hagerstown, and I must say, I was personally offended by all of the Christmas decorations that are up in the main lobby of the Department of Motor Vehicles. They should not be allowed at the DMV.”
— Smithsburg

“I have a small camper which was vandalized within the last day or two. It’s not parked in my yard, it’s parked elsewhere. I called the police, and they could not have been more blasé, and told me not to be angry with them. I have a right to be angry, and with them, because they don’t seem to care what happens to anybody’s property. The level of low thievery in this town ... meanness, is amazing.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m responding to the caller who said Social Security will not add to the deficit. They’re wrong, because with more and more people losing their jobs, that means nobody’s paying in to Social Security. You don’t work, you don’t pay in to it, but people are still collecting it. Eventually it will add to the national deficit, which is just going to put us further and further in debt.”
— Hagerstown

“Leonard Pitts said that an environment full of immature judgment, poor impulse control, overactive hormones, sexual rivalries, drug use and binge drinking, is perhaps not the best place to introduce a weapon of mass destruction. I think that Mr. Pitts has never been in an infantry regiment.”
— Rohrersville

“I cannot understand how people who are assigned to a drug and alcoholic classes and things, in the state of Maryland, or Washington County, to be exact, can be working and drawing a paycheck, and then have a PAC card and everything else. I don’t think it’s right for people who are assigned to that, have insurance through their companies and it pays so much and then the people have to pay the rest of it, when other people can get on it and sign up, say they don’t have a job, and get a PAC card. I think there ought to be a better check system with that organization.”
— Washington County

“Taxpayers better look at their citizen’s guide to Washington County government. We have five county commissioners, a county administrator, three clerks to the county commissioners, one of which isn’t even listed as working for the county, and now the county’s restructuring? Come on, give me a break. We don’t even need a county administrator, and now we have two. That’s right, two, with an assistant county administrator. We better start adding up where our tax dollars are going. I’ve made numerous inquiries about how many people actually work for the county, as far as the political part, and nobody can give me an answer.”
— Hagerstown

“I understand that some people want to see beautiful Christmas lights. Go to Salem Avenue, coming off of 81... It has gorgeous blue and green lights this year. It’s beautiful every year. We make several trips to see this ... It represents the true meaning of Christmas, with a nativity and angels in the yard. It’s a must-see.”
— Hagerstown

“Just want to offer my thanks and condolences to all you dedicated right-wingers who have worked 24/7 and carried the world on your backs for the past four years. After spending $300 million to buy back the White House, coming so close, and then losing? That has to be totally devastating. But please try to buck up and carry on for another four years, and relax, we’ve ‘got your back.’”
— Hagerstown

“I want to offer answers to a couple of questions recently printed in Mail Call. One caller asked why gas was so much cheaper in the South. One answer is that most states have their own taxes on tobacco, alcohol, gasoline, etc. The Southern states tend to have lower taxes on these products, so the products are priced lower than in Northern states with higher taxes. Another caller asked if stores think we are too dumb to notice that 50 percent discounts are not really half of the price they usually pay. When stores offer 50 percent (or any percent) off, they are usually discounting the ‘suggested retail price.’”
— Hagerstown

“A first happened, in the Senate yesterday, the very first time that somebody filibustered their own bill. That was Republican ... McConnell. He filibustered his own bill. He dared the Democrats to vote on it, and they were going to vote on it, and he filibustered his own bill. It just shows Republicans have always been about two things: Greed and power, and nothing else.”
— Hagerstown

“All you congressmen who are going to take us over the fiscal cliff, all I can say for you guys, the next election, bye-bye, you’re gone. I don’t care who you are, Democrat or Republican. And Boehner should be gone, too.”
— Hagerstown

“Nice article on the potential cost of $16 million for a new building for the BOE. With the economy the way it is and all these jobs we’re losing in the area, are they kidding? Sixteen million to build it; how about the moving costs, the furnishing costs, all infrastructure it’s going to take and all? Give us a good figure. And how much do they have in reserves toward this multimillion-dollar issue?”
— Leitersburg

“Merry Christmas to all readers of Mail Call. May you remember that Jesus is the reason for the season, every day of your life, not just the Christmas season. Have a happy one and a blessed one.”
— Washington County

“I’m calling from Williamsport, regarding the beautiful barn that is decorated there. It’s breathtaking. Many of us making donations would love to see a portion of that money go to the one woman that is responsible for that. Her countless hours and service to the community should be recognized.”
— Williamsport
