HAGERSTOWN — North Hagerstown’s wrestling team defeated Williamsport for the second regular season in a row, defending its home mat 33-31 in Saturday’s tri-meet with Middletown.

Starting in the 120-pound weight class, the Hubs fell behind early when Williamsport’s Tanner Canfield defeated Antonio DeCastro, 6-2. However, Colin Edwards defeated Barry Loeser in the 126-pound bout and Gene Balcita defeated Bryan Davis in the 132-pound bout to give North a 6-3 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

The Hubs earned four pins in the victory, produced by Brendon Colbert (138), Tre Landry (145), Andre McCall (160) and Amont Hawkins (220).

“The kids are working to improve,” said North coach Greg Slick. “I think we still have a lot of work to do. I had a few guys wrestle out of weight class to help the team today (Hawkins, Tony Rosario, Zane Burker).”

The Hubs split the tri-meet with Middletown (9-2), which earned the 36-35 victory in the final bout. North was up 35-30 heading into the 285-pound bout, but Blake Lincoln pinned Burker in 2:40 for the win.

“It’s disappointing that we didn’t beat Middletown as well today, but we’ll keep working,” said Slick.

Hawkins, Landry, McCall and Colbert each went 2-0 on the day. With the two bout wins, Colbert remains undefeated on the season with an 8-0 record.

“This season I’ve trained a lot harder. Balcita and I have been training together and pushing each other,” said Colbert. “The training room has gotten a lot harder this season as well, but we’ll just keep pushing.”

Williamsport came into Saturday’s tri-meet undefeated at 4-0, but the Wildcats went 0-2 on the day. Heading into the final two bouts with North, the Wildcats were down 12 points with a chance to tie the match at 33. However, Justin Beckley only earned four points in the 106-pound bout with a major decision over Mike Tobery, securing the victory for the Hubs.

Earler in the day, Williamsport lost to Middletown, 41-21. The Wildcats suffered three pinfall losses in the defeat.

“We wrestled really poorly today,” said Williamsport coach Mike Rechtorovic. “When you wrestle poorly, you go 0-2.”
