Leon R. Bowers, 78, of Dargan, Md., passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, Dec. 13, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md.

Born Oct. 2, 1934, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Samuel and Viola (Shaw) Bowers.

Leon attended Dargan schools.

He was a lifelong member of Samples Manor Church of God in Dargan.

Leon was a farmer all of his life, and owned and operated Clearview Farm in Samples Manor, Md., and Lakeview Farm in Rohrersville, Md.

When not working on the farm, Leon loved spending time with his family and hunting.

Leon is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Doris (Nelson) Bowers of Dargan; a daughter, Viola McDonald and her husband, Charles, of Boonsboro; five sons, Samuel “Sam” Bowers and his wife, Robin, of Rohrersville, John Bowers and his wife, Thelma, of Boonsboro, Thomas “Richie” Bowers and his wife, Cindy, of Rohrersville, Joseph “Joey” Bowers and his wife, Kelly, of Samples Manor, and Leon “Jamie” Bowers and his wife, Janice, of Rohrersville; his two sisters, Leona Saville of Keedysville and Della Thompson and her husband, John, of Boonsboro; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Samuel Bowers Jr.; a sister, Doris Bowers; and three brothers, Harry, Thomas and Samuel Bowers.

A funeral ceremony will be Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Md. The Rev. Roger I. Martin will officiate. Final resting-place ceremonies will follow at Samples Manor Cemetery, Dargan.

The family will receive friends Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday one hour before the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, 1701 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA 22311.
