Rosemarie Linenberger Grand Slam Charity Bridge group makes donations

December 15, 2012

The Rosemarie Linenberger Grand Slam Charity Bridge group has been meeting nearly every Friday for 12 years with two purposes in mind — to play bridge and support the local charities of the group’s choice.

This year, the group voted to help four organizations — Holly Place, Maryland Food Bank-Western Branch (formerly Food Resources), REACH Cold Weather Shelter and The Salvation Army.

While enjoying casual bridge each Friday at Western Sizzlin’ restaurant, the group collects $2 per person per week and donates the total to the charities after its Christmas luncheon.

A check for $1,000 was sent to Holly Place, $400 was sent to Maryland Food Bank-Western Branch, $100 to REACH and $100 to The Salvation Army.

Holly Place has a home on South Potomac Street that cares for approximately 15 low-income seniors. It provides a safe, comfortable home with around-the-clock care for its residents.

While Holly Place receives some funding from the city and county, state funding has been cut off. Some residents are subsidized by the state. Holly Place must find sources for the rest of its operating expenses.

Maryland Food Bank-Western Branch has been doing a good job of trying to keep up with increased requests for food within this area.

REACH and The Salvation Army also administer to those in need.
