If Williamsport cross country coach Randy Buchman could count on anyone this fall, it was Wildcats senior Cody Bowman.

“He’s a model of consistency, the same kid every day at practice, happy to be there and pleased to do what he’s asked to do,” Buchman said. “He loves cross country, loves running and loves competing.

“You always knew you were going to get a good race out of him. He’s a very, very tough kid. You knew he had some aches and pains, like all runners do, but he never talked about them. He just pushed on through. ... He truly exemplifies that idea of leadership by example.”

Bowman is The Herald-Mail’s 2012 Washington County Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.

The senior won a title at the county public school championships and was the top runner at every meet for the Wildcats, leading them to their fifth straight county team title as well as team titles at the Interstate Classic, Bulldog, Frank Keyser, Don Stoner and Urbana Hawk invitationals and the MVAL Antietam Conference championships.

“I was really happy with how all the seniors came together and did well,” Bowman said. “We ran together all summer to try to win the state title.”

However, that’s the one title that eluded the Wildcats, who had to settle for second in Maryland Class 2A for the second straight year — which would end up being Buchman’s last as Williamsport’s coach.

“We wanted to win it for him because we kind of knew it was his last season,” said Bowman, who did his job at states with a fifth-place individual finish, yet seemingly couldn’t have been more disappointed. “We’ll never have another chance to do it.”

“He wanted it for me as a coach more than any other reason,” Buchman said. “He always said, ‘We’re going to win it for you.’ But boy, he did all he could do. He was fifth, and fifth in 2A ain’t cheap. He did his job and then some.”

Bowman said he ran as many as 70 miles a week over the summer in training, including a few 16-mile days.

“I just like going on long distance runs,” he said. “They help clear my mind.”

After skipping the outdoor track season last spring, Bowman is back on Williamsport’s indoor track team this winter.

He said he didn’t run track last spring so that he could, of all things, run more.

“I just got my distance up because, during the season, we don’t do much distance at all,” he said. “They were doing speed, and I was just getting a good base in.”

Bowman said he will run outdoor track this spring, though, for his last hurrah as a Wildcat. After that, he plans to continue his running career at Hagerstown Community College.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.

Joining Bowman on the all-county first team are:

Caleb Buchman, Williamsport

The senior finished third at the county meet, helping to lead the Wildcats to their fifth straight county title.

Luke Daigneault, St. Maria Goretti

The senior won titles at the Independent-Parochial School League and Hagerstown City championships and finished 68th in the seeded race at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional Championships in New York.

Emory Rowland, Williamsport

The senior came through in the biggest meet of the year, placing 13th at states in 2A.

Austin Schetrompf, Williamsport

The senior was a 2A state medalist, placing 23rd. He was 15th in the 2A West region and fourth in the county.

Sean Snyder, Boonsboro

The junior led the Warriors to the 1A team title at states, placing third. He was the 1A West region champ and the county runner-up.

Otto Solberg, Boonsboro
