Mail Call - Dec. 11

December 11, 2012

“To the Washington County residents who are unhappy with the JFK 50-Mile: Please consider not being so self-absorbed, and think of the huge time and effort put into this event by participants and volunteers. It is only one Saturday out of a year.”

— Hagerstown

“As a now-retired former intelligence officer who worked on Central Intel’s bin Laden unit formed in the ’90s, I find the Hagerstown caller concerning President Clinton’s fault, or lack thereof, in not eradicating bin Laden early on, to be sorely lacking in fact. President Clinton was commander in chief during the period of ’92 to 2000, during which time bin Laden bombed two American embassies, and attempted to sink the USS Cole, resulting in many American deaths. Clinton’s military response was absolutely pathetic, and his leadership embarrassing, concerning these varied terror strikes.”

— Martinsburg, W.Va.

“I’d like to comment on these speed cameras. I got a ticket from one of them, but I’ve got another ticket since then, and I really watch my speed in those cameras. So I think they really need to look at those cameras more intense, because I think they’re just randomly giving tickets to people. It’s not fair. The economy’s terrible. And I also have clients that I take care of, elderly people who drive. They’ve got speed tickets from these cameras, OK, and they aren’t speeding, OK? So they need to really look at these cameras more intense.”

— Hagerstown

“To the uneducated caller from Hagerstown: Bin Laden did attack the trade towers when Bill Clinton was in office, and Bill Clinton did nothing in return, and that left the door wide open for 9/11. Just because Republican presidents have used the military in the past does not make them cowards.”

— Martinsburg, W.Va.

“After reading the paper Nov. 28, I see that there’s no difference between Washington County and Washington, D.C. They both have people running the government that only know how to spend money they don’t have. The county commissioners had time to get their picture taken in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, but not one of you had time to come to the ag center to hear complaints and trouble we had with the Fairplay Fire Co., where lives are at stake. If they wanted their pictures taken, I could have done that for free.”

— Boonsboro

“The Potomac Center is not on Florida Avenue, it’s the Arc of Washington County, and they do recycle over there. You can call 301-797-0052, and they’ll give you information about recycling. It’s a very good program that the clients are doing over there, so please recycle.”

— Hagerstown

“About the county (commissioners) getting their pay raise, I do think they ought to get a pay raise; maybe 2 percent. I’m getting 2 percent. I’m a state employee, I’m getting 2 percent in January, after four years. They haven’t had a pay (raise) for 10 years, so I think that 2 or 3 percent is fair. I think 10 and 20 percent is outrageous. I do not think the sheriff is worth $100,000. The wardens at the state do not make $100,000. I don’t think the sheriff should.”

— Halfway

“I’m calling in reference to the county administrator’s saying the recycling changes have worked. I just want to comment that on the street I live on, there’s 10 houses, and of those 10 houses, six of the residents used to take their recycling stuff to the local bins that sat around the county, and now all six of them just throw their recycling stuff in the trash, which makes the landfill a lot fuller with recyclable stuff. So with that in mind, and all those people doing that, and I’m sure all around the county ... I think it definitely is not working.”

— Washington County

“I don’t know why some Mail Calls are cutting up Penny Nigh. She did her job well. She said no to a lot of annexations, which are still sitting empty. We don’t need more houses, with all the empty ones. She was and will be the only person on the council who would return your call and help you with a problem.”

— Hagerstown

“To the Hagerstown caller, thanking Hannity, Limbaugh, Levine and O’Reilly for President Obama’s re-election: It seems like you spend a lot of time watching Fox News instead of MSNBC, which is Obama’s campaign headquarters. Obama himself in 2008 said about McCain’s campaign tactics, I quote, ‘If you can’t run on your past ...’ You evidently have not been watching MSNBC for the past two years, with Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow, Al Sharpton and Lawrence O’Donnell doing nothing but run every Republican candidate into the ground.”

— Hagerstown

“I agree with Tom Wilhelm that we do not need the electoral college. Let the popular vote be the deciding factor. Also, if President Obama is going to cut back as he says, let’s see how much he spends on his inauguration.”

— Morgan County, W.Va.

“To the voters of Hancock: Open up your eyes, and see if the mayor and council vote another ‘yes person’ to take Tim Smith’s place. Don’t you think it’s time for a change?”

— Hancock

“Congress should consider paying for their own health care, and offering the same health care to everybody in this country. It seems only fair.”

— Dargan

“In Nov. 26’s paper, concerning online sales tax, I believe it is incorrect that Maryland would be $200 million richer; rather, Maryland residents would be $200 million poorer. O’Malley would add a $100 million and waste it and have nothing to show for it. He would then raise taxes to pay for the additional $100 million.”

— Rohrersville

“This is about the salary recommendations for our county commissioners. Has anybody out there had a 10 percent to 20 percent increase in their pay lately, or ever? I’m looking to get my property insurance lowered by about $500 a year. It’s way, way too much, for my little house.”
